Problem Solving Pirates!

Students in Mrs. Moreno's third-grade class at Emma Love Hardee worked together to "save Fred." Working together, using problem-solving skills to save Fred, the students had to put the life preserver (gummy Life Savor candy) around Fred (gummy worm) using only paper clips.

Write and Snowball Fight to Break the Ice

Students in Mrs. Edward's class at West Nassau High School participated in a β€œquick writeβ€œ as a class-building activity. Each student received three random writing prompts on one sheet of paper (some were imaginative, some serious). Students chose one prompt for the first quick write, responded with elaboration, then signed their name under their response. Then, the students crumpled their paper, divided into two groups, stood along opposing walls, and had a β€œsnowball fight.” The opposing teams picked up a different crumpled paper, opened it, chose a second writing prompt, and responded with a quick write answer/elaboration. After the third and final quick write and snowball fight, every student read aloud the three answers- from three different peers- on their last β€œsnowball.” It was a light-hearted activity that really helped β€œbreak the ice,” develop some trust among students, and I used the activity to take attendance.

Mrs. Lesoine's Authors

Mrs. Lesoine's Access Points class at Fernandina Beach Middle School wrote this story. The first sentence of this story was given to the students as a prompt. Then, the students took turns providing the rest of the story. After they finished the story, they read it again and acted it out. The class had so much fun with this activity.

In keeping with their class theme, the students wrote a sentence about why they are β€œflamazing,” then decorated their flamingo. They were so excited to share their creations.
