4 basic steps to get started with YOUR yoga practice

1. Learn how to breathe (which you will!)

The most important thing in your yoga practice, is your breathe. It is especially useful when holding postures. You will be breathing in and out through your nose into your belly. It is sometimes called "Darth Vader".

2. Intention

An intention, is a goal for your practice. More like a "why are you here". You can set your intention for yourself or for someone else. You will always sit in a seated comfortable position during this time.

3. Start basic-aka don't go in a position you have no idea how to!

Your practice, it YOUR practice! I have been practicing yoga for 12 years, so what I can do will be different from what you can do. That is ok! This is a time to focus on what you can do and only you.

Instructions and pictures of the yoga postures I will give you are the “goal,” meaning the direction you are going towards, not where you need to be.

4. ALWAYS end with Shavansana (aka relaxation pose)

After every practice you should always end with Shavansana, which is laying on your mat, back side down for 5-15 minutes. It is my favorite part of class :)
Know that it is common for the first couple of times practicing yoga to feel awkward and strange; this will pass with time and practice.
