Attendance Matters...
Attendance Matters
(Excerpt from the LISD Elementary School Handbook)
Regular school attendance is essential for a student to make the most of his or her education – to benefit from teacher – led school activities, to build each day’s learning on the previous day’s, and to grow as an individual. Absences from class may result in serious disruption of a student’s mastery of instructional materials; therefore, the student and parent should make every effort to avoid unnecessary absences. If your child must be absent from school, please send a doctor or parent note to the office within 48 hours of your child returning to school.
Absence Classifications: Whether for full days or parts of days, the following information about absences applies:
Excused Absences: Excused absences are not viewed as days a student is entitled to take. Excused absences include, but are not limited to personal illness, funeral/memorial, quarantine, or weather or road conditions that make travel dangerous. Students are required to attend at least 90 percent of the days the class is offered. The student will be required to make up excessive excused absences.
Unexcused Absences: An unexcused absence is any absence that does not meet the definition of an excused absence (examples: personal business, vacation, traffic, car trouble, etc.).

Understanding Math Models & Strategies Used to Build Deep Understanding...
Beginning last year, LISD adopted an instructional resource called Bridges in Mathematics. Bridges uses certain models and strategies to help students build deep mathematical understanding of various concepts such as counting, place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The belief is that students first need to develop a conceptual understanding of numbers and their relationships in order to be able to later learn and understand algorithms for manipulating them. Here are the various models that students in K-5 use over the course of their math studies in elementary school. Many of these tools are introduced in kindergarten but continue to be used year after year for more and more complex thinking and operations. This approach allows students to be more flexible with their thinking and approach problems in different ways. The emphasis is more on the thinking, reasoning and problem solving aspect of mathematics instead of just getting the right answer. For more math resources, please visit: http://www.mathlearningcenter.org/resources/families.
For examples of these models, please see the attachment to the email message that brought you this newsletter!
Leader in Me...
Leader in Me
Stephen R. Covey, founder of the Leader in Me, used to say, “If you want to make minor, incremental changes and improvements, work on practices, behavior, or attitude. But if you want to make significant, quantum improvement, work on paradigms." The power of The Leader in Me leadership model lies in its core paradigms, from which everything else flows.
Leader in Me Core Paradigms
Paradigm of Leadership-----Everyone can be a leader. (not just for a few)
Paradigm of Potential--------Everyone has genius. (not just a few gifted)
Paradigm of Change----------All change starts with me. (it's up to systems to change)
Paradigm of Motivation------Students own their own learning. (teachers control learning)
Paradigm of Education-------Develop the whole person (only focus on academics)
