Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 1st July 2022
Cathedral School Entrepreneurs
Grow your money challenge!
The funds raised will be given to the charity that the children have chosen to support - Childline.
Find out below about what each class has been doing to prepare for Enterprise Day!
Reception Enterprise Project
Reception had some brilliant inspiration for their enterprise project after a child in the class created a beautiful Hama bead keyring for their bookbag. There is no mistaking their bag now! Reception set about working on their project, showing creativity and a great deal of perseverance as they created their fabulously bright and cheerful keyrings. We are sure you will agree that they have done a brilliant job of carefully positioning the Hama beads to create some excellent patterns and designs, and we very much hope you might come along and purchase one!
Year 6 Enterprise Project
Year 4 Enterprise Project
Year 4 have been working hard for their 'Grow Your Money Challenge'. It all started with thinking about possible products and then researching ideas in pairs and small groups. Using their maths and computing knowledge and with a budget of only £20, they worked out how much their product would be to make and how much profit they would expect to raise for Childline. With all the information needed, they wrote and prepared a persuasive pitch in the style of Dragon's Den. They spoke clearly and confidently about why the Year 4 dragons should choose their product. The voting started! The class voted for their favourite product and pitch, and our worthy winners were Henry and Emery with their interesting and imaginative ice cream sundaes. Since then, the class have helped Emery and Henry decide on a selection of 'premium' flavours to sell by thinking about their own favourites and asking other children and adults in school. These special and secret recipes will be kept under lock and key until next week! We hope you can wait that long!
Everyone will need to try the tastiest ice cream around!
Everyone will need to taste the 'coolest' ice cream in town.
Everyone will need to join the fun.
Join us. Buy one. Enjoy it.
Year 3 Enterprise Project
Year 2 Enterprise Project
Year 5 Enterprise Project
So the children got themselves in groups of 6 and they were given £10 per group to spend. After discussing their initial ideas and completing lots of research each group came up with their favourite two ideas which they had to pitch to the rest of the class, who then were tasked with the job of picking the idea which each group would then share for enterprise day. As part of the pitch the children had to price all the items that they would require whilst attempting to find cheapest retailer. They had to detail the costings and provide what their profit would be if all their items sold or an estimated profit based on the number of people who took part in their game.
There were lots of ideas great ideas and on enterprise day there will be a selection of stalls. From groups making loom band bracelets, cookies, limeade and cake pops to other groups who are making games for others to play including a mystery box, a treasure hunt and a gadget lucky dip.
The children have created team names and designed logos as well as creating advertisements for their product or service to share on enterprise day. They are looking forward to making as much profit as they can because they have the added challenge of trying to make more profit the the children in Year 6!

COVID Update
You may be aware from national news coverage, cases of COVID-19 in the community are increasing.
Cases of COVID-19 are once again rising across the UK, including in North Yorkshire. The latest increase is being driven by the BA.4 and BA.5 sub-variants of Omicron,
People with symptoms of a respiratory infection, such as COVID-19, and who have a high temperature or do not feel well, should try to stay at home and avoid contact with others.
Those who are asked – or choose to – test and get a positive COVID-19 result should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for 5 days following the day of their positive result. Free COVID-19 testing is no longer available for the majority of the population, but tests can be purchased from local pharmacies (including many supermarket pharmacies).
If a child or young person aged 18 or under tests positive for COVID-19, they should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for 3 days. This starts from the day after they did the test.
Symptoms of COVID-19 in children can include:
- a high temperature or shivering (chills) – a high temperature means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)
- a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours
- a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste
- shortness of breath
- feeling tired or exhausted
- an aching body
- a headache
- a sore throat
- a blocked or runny nose
- loss of appetite
- diarrhoea
- feeling sick or being sick
STEM work in Year 3
Year 3 have worked hard in STEM week learning all about volcanoes and earthquakes. We explored what causes earthquakes using jam and orange peel to represent the tectonic plates, and watched a model volcano erupt to help us understand how a build up of pressure can cause a large explosion! Linked to this topic we have also designed and made earthquake proof buildings using our knowledge of 3D shape nets and methods of reinforcing paper such as corrugating, laminating and ribbing.
Finally, we have continued with our topic on ‘Healthy Sandwiches’ and learnt how to bake bread! We had great fun mixing together the ingredients and kneading the dough. The kitchen staff kindly let us borrow their ovens to bake the bread, and we thoroughly enjoyed the taste tests. In our evaluation of the bread our favourite loaves were the white flour and the oat and linseed because the texture was light and fluffy and the crust had a nice chew to it. We enjoyed the other breads: cheddar and tomato, wholemeal and ancient grains too.
Reflections on Lindisfarne
Year 5 and 6 Reflections
We asked the children in Year 5 and Year 6 what they enjoyed about their trip to Lindisfarne.
Meredith - The boat trip to The Farne Islands was really fun because we saw lots of seals and puffins. I didn't realise how small puffins were!
Oliver - I liked dorm time because it was fun spending time with friends in a different place with bunk beds.
Jack - I think Bamburgh Castle was my favourite part because the different rooms in the castle were really interesting and I learnt lots of historic facts. The view from outside was also really cool.
Olivia - Rockpooling was pretty cool because we saw lots of fish and hermit crabs. Merle got her finger pinched by one of them!
Nathan - My favourite part of the Lindisfarne trip was the Grace Darling Museum because we got to learn about someone’s heroic act to save others at risk to themselves. In the museum there was the boat she rescued the nine shipwrecked survivors in.
Gracie - I really loved many things from Lindisfarne, one of my favourite things we did was going to the beach and sliding down the sand dunes, I also really liked just hanging out in the dorms with my friends.
Ernie - At Lindisfarne I enjoyed rock pooling because it was nice and sunny and I also enjoyed seeing all the animals and fish. When we went to the beach in the evening we could hear the seals singing.
Erin - I thought the boat trip to the Farne Islands was the best part of the trip because I’ve never been on a boat before I really enjoyed looking at the birds, especially the puffins, and seeing jellyfish in the water. We saw Grace Darling’s Lighthouse.
Lucas - My favourite part of the Lindisfarne trip was the fish and chips because I was really hungry.
