Wildcat Pride

January 14, 2022

Dear WES Families,

Congratulations to the following individuals for being selected as recipients of a Texas PTA Life Membership recognizing their commitment to our school community and PTA:

Rachel Benavides, Rosa Giraldo, and Susan Tyner! They will be recognized at the annual district Founders Day Banquet on Thursday, February 24.

COVID cases continue to be on the rise. Please remember if a student is living with a family member that has tested positive for COVID, the student must quarantine for 10 days regardless of vaccine status. Please remember the student cannot test out of quarantine.

To minimize the spread of COVID, we are highly recommending the use of masks.

We hope you have a wonderful long MLK weekend! We will see our Wildcats again on Tuesday!

Tami Braun, Principal

Interim Superintendent, Dr. Patterson's Message:

LISD Families,

As we prepare for a three-day weekend (Monday is a holiday for all students and staff), I want to touch base with you and tell you about some changes you may see on your student’s campus.

We continue to battle the spread of COVID in our schools and in our community. Student cases are hovering between 1-2% across the district, with some schools feeling a greater impact than others. Our staff members - teachers, office staff, administrators, food service, custodial, bus drivers, substitute teachers - are also feeling the effects of the virus. As you can imagine, it becomes very difficult to operate schools when you don’t have enough staff members to cover all the needs. In fact, school districts across the state have closed campuses or even the whole district over the last couple of days to try and give staff members a chance to recover from illness. In LISD, we closed our early childhood center for several days this week and into next week.

I share this with you because we must change some of our practices to help stop the spread of COVID among both students and staff. I want to strongly encourage you to have your students wear masks to school. I am aware there are many opinions on this issue, and we are not putting a mask mandate in place. But for those who are willing, please take that step for us.

Modified Tier 3 Mitigation Measures
At the elementary and middle school levels, we are moving to what we are calling a modified Tier 3, which means that as necessary, schools may implement many of the strategies on our Tier 3 list. However, it is important to note that every school may be a little bit different, depending on their specific situation. I expect that most ES and MS campuses will limit visitors, social distance and limit group work as much as possible, and maybe even modify school arrival and dismissal procedures. The procedures at your school may change depending on their circumstances, and they will communicate with you as needed to keep you informed of those changes.

COVID Case Reporting
We are doing our best to offer extended hours for COVID Case Reporting and have an online form available for you to submit your information. Please check the district website for hours and reporting options.

Thank you for your support
I want to ask for your continued support and patience with our staff members. Everyone is doing the best they can to serve our students and keep schools open. We know being in school and learning from our outstanding teachers is the best thing for students. The last 20+ months have been incredibly challenging for all of us, and it is more important than ever that we show kindness, understanding and patience. There is no playbook for this type of situation, and I assure you, everyone in LISD is working as hard as possible to make the best decisions we can. We continue to rely on local health experts and guidance from the Texas Education Agency as we determine our plans.

We put together this video for you that highlights some of our efforts and provides more context for some of the mitigation measures we have in place.

Message from Gary Patterson

I appreciate your support for all our teachers and staff, and for LISD.

COVID Notice

LISD Parent / Staff Member,

There has been one or more confirmed case(s) reported today on our campus. The LISD COVID Tracker will be updated daily with the most current information available - www.lisd.net/covidtracker

Any person identified who had a prolonged exposure with this individual, will be notified and given the appropriate protocol to follow based upon the most current public health guidelines and in consultation with the Denton County Health department.

In response to this lab-confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis, we have implemented cleaning and disinfection procedures compliant with the CDC guidelines and continue with the protocols that mitigate the spread of this virus:

  • Social Distancing

  • Frequent handwashing/hand sanitizing

  • Monitoring students and staff for signs and symptoms of COVID-19 or exposure to COVID-19

We ask all our families, students, and staff members to vigilantly monitor themselves continuously for COVID-19 symptoms, during the school day and prior to coming to campus. The signs and symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, cough, and shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, muscle aches, fatigue, sore throat, chills, headache, runny nose, congestion, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.

Please keep your child home with any signs of illness in order to keep the campus safe and healthy for all students. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the health of yourself or your child, please contact your medical provider.

LISD continues to work diligently to provide an in-person learning experience with the cooperation and collaboration of our students, parents, and staff members. We truly are ALL in this TOGETHER to keep our schools open and as safe as possible during the pandemic.

Thank you for your assistance.

Fifth Grade SIP Parents:

We hope this email finds you well. It is already time to plan for the following school year and the enrollment season is soon approaching.

All current Spanish Immersion 5th grade students at Wellington are able to continue with specialized Spanish courses in 6th grade at Forestwood Middle School (MS) in their MS Advanced Spanish Language Program. If you missed the optional virtual 5th grade parent meeting to introduce you to the course sequence and nature of the MS Advanced Spanish Language Program on January 11th, 2022, a recording will be posted in the SIP newsletter (see link below) for your convenience.

Your plans regarding continuation in the MS Advanced Spanish Language Program are communicated through the MS Intent Form. We ask that all 5th grade SIP families complete this form for planning purposes. For families who have already made a decision about middle school plans, please complete the MS Intent Form prior to the first deadline of 12/16/21. For families who need more time to decide, the second deadline is 1/18/22. After the 1/18/22 deadline, families can still make a decision. However, any associated in-district transfer items will be handled by the family.

5th grade SIP students at Wellington who continue onto the program at Forestwood do NOT have to handle their own transfer. This will be taken care of for them through the World Language office as long as they complete a transition form. No action required-- reminder emails will be sent directly to families through the World Language office.

We know that soon you will make many important decisions regarding middle school plans. We are here to support you throughout this process. Please do not hesitate to contact us!

Sincerely,

Second Steps Curriculum

Each week, every grade level teacher will be teaching one lesson and then discussing that lesson topic throughout the week from the Second Step Social and Emotional curriculum. The content covered by Second Step is required content in the State of Texas.

As parents, you will be receiving weekly Skylert messages from the LISD Counseling Department that will explain what each grade level’s weekly topic will be. These Skylert messages come complete with links so that you may reinforce these skills at home with your child. There are suggested activities and talking points to use with your child if you choose to do so.

Gmail Accounts

Update on gmail - Personal gmail accounts are not being delivered to some LISD email accounts. Google is aware of this situation, however there is not a specific timeline for a resolution. The best way for parents to communicate is directly with LISD staff if they have not received a response to their email. Parents may also use their child’s LISD, send a message through Skyward messenger, or send from a non-gmail email account.
