Note from the Principal-Cathy Jacobs
Our 4th and 5th graders did an outstanding job this week on their Benchmarks (practice STAAR). This benchmark is not taken for a grade. We will use the students' performance to determine which skills they have mastered and which skills they are still needing to improve on. Teachers will utilize the data in small group instruction and reteach opportunities.
Field days coming up in two weeks! Classes will be assigned a specific color to wear on their Field Day. Teachers will communicate the class color as Field Day gets closer. We will need parent volunteers for Field Day, the schedule is below. If you would like to volunteer on Field Day, please contact our P.E. Teacher, Nekia McAlpin, via email nekia.mcalpin@cfisd.net.

5 Things Parents Can Do To Raise Successful Kids
As parents, we all want to see our kids grow up to be successful, well-adjusted adults. However, becoming successful adults doesn't come without some effort as they are growing up. Here 5 simple things parents and/or guardians can do to help their children on their way to becoming a successful member of society.
- Express high expectations-Although kids will tell you they don't like to hear parents always telling what, when, and how to do something, they do hear you when you expression your expectations. Make sure you set your expectations clearly and set them high. Help your kids meet your expectations, and when they don't, love on them anyway and keep pushing.
- Praise them the right away-Always be specific in your praise...praise the effort, not the ability. For example, don't just say "Good job! You are so smart!" Say..."Good job! I love the effort you put in to figure out the answer!"
- Take them outside and get them moving-Research shows that kids who move open up more neural pathways than kids who sit all day. Take your kids outside and get them moving...run, jump, roll, and crawl with them.
- Read to them...correctly-Don't just read the book....discuss the book. Questions like-How do you think the character feels right now? What do you think is going to happen on the next page? If you could change one thing about the ending, what would it be?
- Make them do chores-Chores teach responsibility, empathy, and teamwork.

Joke of the week:
Q- How does the moon cut his hair?
A- Eclipse it.
Math Tip: Give your child a number. Ask them to tell you what 10 more would be, and what 10 less would be. For example, give the number 16. 10 more would be 26, 10 less would 6.
Reading/ Writing Tip: Use sticky notes and your favorite book to tell the character, setting, problem and resolution.
