St. Anthony School
Developing a Child's Mind, Body, and Soul
April - 2016
In Loco Parentis
One of the first things you learn when becoming a teacher is the concept of "in loco parentis" which means "in the place of the parent". When you send your child to school, teachers step into the role of parent while the child is at school. We care for them, guide them, and develop special relationships. This concept really hit home with me this past week when we learned that Hunter Quihuis had passed away. Hunter was one of our first graduating 8th graders. He was a very special young man and touched many of us with his kindness, gentleness, and loving compassion. As the years move forward at St. Anthonys, my family grows exponentially. My heart aches for the Quihuis family and those students and staff that were so close to him. Please keep all of them in your prayers. There will be a service here at St. Rita's to be scheduled. There will be services scheduled in Phoenix this week:
Visitation from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6th with a Rosary starting at 7:00 p.m. at Holy Cross Mortuary located at: 9925 West Thomas Rd. in Avondale.
Catholic Mass will be on Thursday, April 7th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church located at: 13720 W. Thomas Rd. in Avondale.
Quihuis Family Address: 4909 N. 110th Lane, Phoenix, AZ 85037.
AZMerit Testing
This month students in grades 3-8 will be taking the AZMerit test. The April calendar below details the testing dates for classes. Please make sure that your child gets a good night sleep and a healthy breakfast on testing days.
Arizona Private School Tuition Tax Credit
Participate and Spread the Word to Help Grow St. Anthonys!
My name is Karen Yorksmith, and my family has been blessed abundantly by those who take advantage of the AZ Private School Tuition Tax Credit to redirect some or all of their Arizona income tax dollars to St. Anthony School toward scholarships for students. Truly, the school’s doors are able to remain open because of those AZ residents who participate in the tax credit. Once we informed them and asked them to participate, our AZ friends and family are more than happy each year to see their tax dollars go toward scholarships so that our kids can attend our amazing school.
Our oldest daughter, Monica, was in the first 8th grade graduating class of St. Anthony’s in 2014, with her attendance beginning in 2nd grade. Our twins, Clare & Chloe, began at St. Anthony’s with Mrs. Sedillo in Pre-K, and are now in 6th grade. Our youngest, Christopher, is currently in 2nd grade, and also began in Pre-K. The impact of St. Anthony School on the formation of our children’s foundation has been tremendous in every way – academically, emotionally, spiritually, physically, artistically, and beyond, which shines through in their caring and confident attitudes. At St. Anthony’s, the older students look out for the younger ones, everyone knows each other, and a sense of family is fostered with Christian values woven throughout each day’s activities and relationships. St. Anthony’s is indeed a family where our students are loved and cared for as they develop into who God created them to be.
Tuition at St. Anthony School for Kinder-8th grades is $4,950, with a 10% discount for additional siblings, which is SO much less than what our state spends per student for public education. Our school is run on a tight budget with not a single penny wasted. Students receiving tuition assistance pay an average of just $100 per month, with 87% of our students receiving assistance. This makes attending St. Anthony School the most affordable private education in the White Mountains! So, spread the word about enrollment opportunity at our wonderful school and the amazing option to redirect our AZ income tax dollars toward student scholarships and the continued growth of St. Anthony’s.
