The purpose of this act is to protect the rights of students with disabilities by ensuring that everyone receives a free appropriate public education regardless of ability .

Benefits of this act s to have equal access to students with disabilities, provided additional special education services and procedural safeguards.

Meaning for Schools

All are intended to clarify elements of the law and its regulations, and are an important part of understanding IDEA and how to implement it.


Some obstacles are that you have to qualify. An example is children have to be ages of 3 and 21.

Section 612 of IDEA states:

to the maximum extent appropriate, children with disabilities, including children in public or private institutions or other care facilities, are educated with children, who are not disabled, and that special classes, separate schooling, or other removal of children with disabilities from the regular educational environment occurs only when the nature or severity of the disability is such that education in regular classes with the use of supplementary aids and services cannot be achieved satisfactorily. (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, 1990)
