We are continuing our Elements of Fiction unit. We will do an author study this week to describe similarities and differences in the plots and settings of several works by the same author. Students will use fiction text to make connections, ask questions, monitor comprehension, make inferences, and retell what they have read.

We will continue to discuss the value of pre-writing in the writing process. The students have created different types of brainstorming lists and maps of ideas that will help them think about what to write for a personal narrative prompt. This week we will talk about ZOOMING in on a sentence to add details. We will also discuss how to add our 5 senses to our writing to bring it to life.

Use Spelling City for additional spelling practice. You will find a link to each weeks words:

Please review all spelling words from the past 3 weeks. We will have a Spelling Edit test on Thursday. Students will have to read a sentence and choose the correct spelling from a multiple choice type of question.

We will continue to practice composing and decomposing numbers this week. Number bonds are a great visual for our students to see the part + part = whole of a number sentence and the relationship between the addends and sum. We are using vocabulary words such as compose, decompose, addend, digit, and value. We will also be reviewing place value and how to write numbers in expanded form.

Last week we spent time putting the scientific methods into practice while using some of the science tools that we have been introduced to. The scientific method is an important concept, as we will be applying it to all the units that we study throughout the school year. In science this week we will continue to focus on force and motion. The students will have numerous opportunities this week to use the scientific method to explore the effects of force on objects, and the movement that it causes. Many hands-on experiences will really help them in truly understanding these science concepts.

Social Studies

Last week we spent time continuing to discuss what it means to be a good citizen, and how we can show pride in our country. We discussed different symbols of our country and the meaning behind them. Time was also spent discussing heroes and good citizens and the character traits that they possess. We even spent time talking about Anne Sullivan, as hero and namesake for our school. In social studies this week the students will begin tying in what they have learned about being good citizens with government. This week we will focus on the purpose of government and how we, as citizens, have certain rights. The students will also reflect on what laws in communities and the reason that we have laws and rules.
