Veterinary anesthesiologists administer anesthesia to patients, providing sedation during surgical procedures. An anesthesiologist is responsible for a multitude of duties such as the following:
- evaluation of animals prior to treatment
- development of a sedation plan
- administration of anesthesia as well as other pain relief agents
- the monitoring of vital signs
- operation of specialized equipment
- providing consultations on cases as requested by other veterinarians
And even more (depending on your branch and experience level)
In addition to these duties, an anesthesiologist must be prepared to witness many gruesome images and bearings. Cases necessary of anesthesia could be profoundly unsettling and disconcerting. These specialized veterinarians are often put in uncomfortable situations with not only their deprived patients, but their worrisome owners as well.
On top of it all, veterinary anesthesiologist may or may not be placed in an unsanitary environment, but they are, either way, expected to facilitate in an eager manor.

Board certification includes at least three years of veterinary anesthesiology work, as well as at least one year of additional experience in a practical clinical area.
In addition to the schooling requirements necessary for veterinary anesthesiology, a candidate must also publish at least one veterinary anesthesiology study submitted in a professional journal, along with a well documented case log. Only after all of these requirements are met, a student in then qualified to take the certification exam.
After the certification exam is processed and passed, a student is then able to take specialized classes in the field of veterinary anesthesiology. The courses in which they take is entirely depended upon where in the field they desire to specialize in.
