Second Grade "Beary" Good News

Highlights From Our Week
We are working on the final task for our Real World Experience for Unit 1 in Math. This week we went into the LRC to work on SeeSaw using the iPads. Mrs. Sayre assisted us in explaining the process we used to build our birdhouses. We did this instead of writing out our explanations thinking this was a more engaging activity for the students. They enjoy using the iPads and having new experiences with them. We expect this task to be completed after one more session with the iPads in the LRC.
Literacy
In reading we continue our unit on Fiction literature. This week we focused on characters and thinking about their point of view. We paid attention to what they say, how they say things, and inferring the character’s point of view. We practiced this as a whole class, with a partner, and individually during our independent reading time. As we use mentor texts to present our lessons, we encourage the students to take AR quizzes on the books that we read to them. There are two more weeks left in the quarter to make those AR goals. GO READERS - YOU CAN DO IT!
On Friday we had groups do a Reader’s Theatre to practice fluency. Some of the groups are pictured below.
In writing we continue to write in powerful ways by thinking about word choice and conferring with each other to make our writing longer, stronger, and with feeling.
Math
We had our first end of unit test on Thursday. Next week we will reteach some of the concepts to students who need a little boost and they will have the opportunity to correct their mistakes.
Our next unit, Extending Place Value, focuses on the order of numbers, using the less than and greater than symbols (the gator eats the bigger number), telling time to the five minutes, and identifying and counting money. We will give you IXL sections and TenMarks assignments as we teach them in class. In the meantime, students can work on completing IXL:
Counting and Number Pattern:
A.1, A.2, A.3, A.4, and A.5
Star Student
Michelle was our star student this past week. Her favorite colors are pink and blue, her favorite animals are cats and dogs, her favorite food is pizza, and she likes soccer. At school Michelle likes math, and at home she likes to play and read to her baby brother, Alexander. Michelle also has an older brother here at Goodrich, Dinarijus.
Our next Star Student is. . . Nathan !
AR (Accelerated Reader)
Here are the latest winners of AR prizes! These students have reached their goal or beyond. The end of the quarter will be here before we know it (October 28th). We hope that your student is reading 20 minutes each night, either independently, with you as a partner, or you reading to them.
