Our History

Porter Traditional School opened its doors to students on September 7, 2004.

We are proud that our school is named after a local educator, Mary G. Porter, who began her career as a first grade teacher in a three-room elementary school in Dumfries, Virginia.

About Mary G. Porter Traditional School

Porter has grades 1st-8th and with a total of 628 students. Students at Porter are required to wear uniforms. They may choose from a variety of uniform options to determine their outfit for any given day. Our school colors are red, white & blue. Porter Traditional School is a specialty school in Prince William County. The foundation of the "School of Choice" includes rigorous academic instruction, strong performance expectations, high behavioral standards, good attendance, uniform expectations, and consistent parental involvement. The goal of our school is to provide an educational setting that meets the educational needs of all students, regardless of their gender, race, ethnicity or religious point of view.

Application Process

Any student living in eastern Prince William County is eligible to apply to attend Mary G. Porter. Parent's must complete an application for each student and must submit it by a specified deadline. Also, some grades may have to take a test that is included with the application. All complete applications for each year are placed in a pool from which a random list of applicants is generated. Names are then taken in order from the list for each grade level as openings become available. Applications are received by Porter, and the selection process is handled by PWCS and Porter administrative personnel.

Porter is located on Forest Grove Drive in Woodbridge. From Route 1, go East on Rippon Blvd and take the first right on to Forest Grove Drive. Make your first left to PorterTraditional School.
