Family Engagement Jan 2023
January 2023
Families and schools working together, because our students are worth it!
January is National Mentoring Month!
This month, the focus is on Mentoring and the positive effect it can have on young lives. Read how mentoring offers a wealth of benefits for both the mentor and the mentee. Does your organization have a mentoring program? Do you have a student or colleague who could benefit from your sharing the skills and experience you have gleaned? Are there family members of your students who would be good mentors for other families, especially those new to the special education process? Or would you like to be mentored? Ask a PaTTAN consultant about the Pennsylvania Attract-Prepare-Retain (APR) Mentoring Project and how to become a mentee.
New Videos Introduced in the Meet the IEP Team Members Series!

NAFSCE's Educator Preparation Framework for Family and Community Partnerships
The Educator Preparation Framework for Family and Community Partnerships presents new processes and ideas for reimagining how educators are prepared for family and community engagement. The report includes:
- Extensive research on the importance of preparing educators for family and community engagement
- A series of ideas and levers to spark inspiration, innovation and change
- 30 field case studies highlighting how families, educator preparation programs, schools, and policymakers are making ideas work on the ground
- Ten recommendations for how educator preparation programs, families, schools, and communities, as well as state agencies and associations, can join together and make systemic change
The Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) Family Engagement Rubrics provide school PBIS teams with information and a consistent way to measure family engagement within their PBIS framework. They are designed to assist school teams with identifying the areas relating to PBIS and family engagement that are well established and those areas that need to be strengthened. Teams can use the rubrics on a regular schedule to help track progress and make new improvements. These resources were developed for the Ohio Department of Education by the Ohio Statewide Family Engagement Center in collaboration with Ohio’s PBIS Network.
Wishing you and yours a Happy and Healthy 2023!
