Waikīkī School Parent Bulletin - April 26, 2023

Join us for an Enriching Day at the Honolulu Zoo - May 6, 2023

Waikīkī School in partnership with the Honolulu Zoological Society have designed and developed enrichment items for the animals at the Honolulu Zoo. Students spent the year meeting with Zoo staff learning how they care for the animals, and coming up with ways to help enrich the animals’ lives. They built puzzle boxes for the primates, a popcorn feeder for the elephants, a back scratcher for the cow, nest boxes for the Golden Lion Tamarins, a meerkat interactive termite mound, as well as sloth and porcupine feeders.

Students drew up plans, experimented with materials and made numerous revisions. In addition to working with their classroom teachers at Waikīkī School, the 5th graders were given the opportunity to work with seniors in Punahou’s engineering department. These Punahou students acted as mentors, helping to revise plans and providing expertise, as well as fabricating some of the materials for the project. A partnership within a partnership. Kids working together to improve the lives of animals.

On May 6, 2023 at 10:00am the public is invited to visit the Zoo to see the animals interact with these items. In addition, there will be paper mache enrichment items placed throughout to provide a fun filled day for many of the animals. Everyone is encouraged to enter the Zoo when it opens at 10:00, pay admissions and walk around to see all the fun the animals are having with their new toys.
