Nazareth Catholic Community
January 21, 2018 ~ 3rd Sunday of Ordinary Time
Greetings Everyone,
Winter can be difficult to endure at times - especially these past few weeks - however the cold of winter serves a very important purpose. The cold allows trees and plants to grow deeper roots and new branches. The cold also kills off plant diseases and invasive insects from the previous season. Simply put, without winter, we would not have the flowers and the fruits of a New York spring and summer.
One of my favorite analogies for spiritual growth is the winter pruning of apple trees. It is in the heart of winter’s cold that apple trees are pruned. Dead and unnecessary branches are removed to make room for new and healthy branches to grow. The act of pruning allows apple trees to produce healthy and large fruit in the summer. Without pruning the tree becomes overgrown and produces a multitude of small inedible fruit.
At the start of the Spring semester, we are like the apple tree. We have an opportunity to prune “branches” from our lives that prevent us from growing. Spiritual pruning frees us from unnecessary burdens and results in us producing large and healthy fruit with our lives. Sometimes we each need to prune activities, distractions, habits or negative people. The removal of these old or unhealthy "branches" can free us to grow to new depths and heights. Winter is an opportunity to prune things that prevent us from fully becoming the person God created us to be.
What do you need to prune in order to make room for these new opportunities of growth? I pray that this new semester will bring each of you the courage and strength to prune and grow!
Winter Peace,
~ Jamie
Looking for a houseing option for next year......
This is an invitation for three to four students who will be a Junior or Senior in the fall to live in an intentional community where you will learn the skills for living a discerning way of life with a community of four Sisters of St. Joseph. We are committed to living in the city, to living simply, and to being connected with our neighborhood, which includes Mother Earth.
We live communally, which is based on mutual respect and shared responsibility for the on-going life of the community, like shared prayer and reflection on how we find God in our daily experiences. We also share responsibilities for cooking and the care of the house and all that is necessary for promoting healthy and integrated communal living.
If this sounds interesting and you would like more information, please come to an information meeting with Sr. Donna and Andrea Peters, who has been living in community this past year, after the 7pm Mass on Sunday 1/21/18.
If you are unable to attend this meeting but would like to have a conversation about this, please contact Sr. Donna 585-733-4422,ddelsanto@ssjrochester.org
