News from Mrs. Mankin

Dear Bulldog Families,

We would like to thank each student and family for making our return to school a smooth one. As I shared on our video morning announcements, it has been a week of moving, exploring, building, and collaborating. Students have filled our building with energy and excitement for learning - it has been a pleasure to start this phase our our learning journey.

Mrs. Lee and I have been in many classrooms this week, witnessing a variety of learning experiences. Our younger students are reading and growing their "new favorites" list as well as sharing small moments verbally that they can then write about. As mathematicians, our students are skip-counting and measuring lengths of paper chains with team members. Our older students are engaged in STEAM challenges, revising their writing, and collecting and analyzing data. All students have been engaged in using "I feel" statements in order to let others better understand their point of view.

These are just a few highlights of our jam-packed week of learning. Please be sure to ask your student about his/her favorite part of the week and/or being back at school. We appreciate your extra flexibility and patience as we partner with you to create the best learning opportunities for your student.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Lori Mankin, Principal

Day of Remembrance

September 11th is a day of remembrance...one in which we consider the lasting impact of the events of this day. Ms. Coffman, our Global Studies teacher, has created a student-friendly explanation of the significance of September 11th. You might choose to watch this as a family and then engage in some discussion about the significance of this day.

Enrichment Lessons - Wednesday Highlight

Please join us on Wednesdays for enrichment lessons. For the next three Wednesdays, we will be studying Early Fishers through its Characters. Early Fishers through its Characters. Did you know what William Conner learned from the Lanape? Why are we called Hamilton County? What did William Conner learn during his life along the White River 200 years ago?

  • Wednesday, Sept. 16th, we will start with a study of the Lanape and Conner.
  • Wednesday, Sept. 23, we will discover details about Conner in his pioneer life.
  • Wednesday, Sept. 30, we will discuss how he changed, what he learned, and what we can learn from him.

Mrs. Murch (Conner Prairie teacher-in-residence) and Mrs. Gibson (Teacher Development Specialists at NBE) will plan and Mrs. Gibson will facilitate the k-2 Zoom meeting to notice and wonder/inquiry-based learning. Grades 3-4 will be able to join both Mrs. Murch and Mrs. Gibson via Zoom to read texts, maps, photos, and letters for inquiry on the times of 1820. In the end, we will have time for a virtual fieldtrip where the students can ask questions of the staff about life and learning in 1820.

1:00-1:30 is best for K-2, 2:00-2:30 is best fit for grades 3-4 for this study.

1:30-2:00 is for any student in K-4 and may not directly tie to the study of Fishers every week.

HSE Elementary Schedule - Phase 2

We will begin week 2, on Monday, September 14th so the red group will be attending in-person. Remember that the red group always attends in-person on Mondays and Tuesdays. The blue group always attends on Thursdays and Friday. Wednesday is the day that alternates between the two groups for in-person learning. Please reach out to your student's teacher or the office if you have any questions.
