The Eagle Eye Edition
Mountain View Elementary
September 2023
Principal's Monthly Message
Hello Eagle Families,
What a GREAT start to the 2023-2024 school year! It has been so wonderful to see all the smiling faces; students and staff reconnecting with one another, exploring friendships with new people, and thriving in our Eagle community.
September brings the opportunity to settle into the routines that began last month, all of which are designed to help each student reach their full potential and be the best they can be! With that in mind, I invite you to look at some of the critical information below centered around SUCCESS ROUTINES:
- Attendance (To SOAR, Be Here More!)
- Behavior Expectations (PBIS)
- Safety (Getting to and from school safely)
- Academic Success (Read daily; Footsteps to Brilliance)
I look forward to seeing you around at one of the many community events happening this month!
SOARing with Eagle Pride,
~Mrs. Marich
September is Attendance Awareness Month
To SOAR, Be Here More!!
We all know that school is important and that missing school, or being absent, is not ideal. But it is not just important: DAILY, ON TIME ATTENDANCE needs to be a PRIORITY! Did you know...
- Missing just one day a month = 10 days per school year = 80 days in elementary school
That is half of a school year MISSED (and falling behind) , just by taking 1 day off at a time!!
Now let's look at being late to school. Aside from interrupting the teacher, disturbing the other classmates, and feeling anxious about entering late, the student who is consistently tardy to school, by just 5 minutes is missing SO much more!
- 5 minutes late per day = 25 minutes missed each week = 100 minutes of lost class time each month
And when you total that up for a whole school year, it is a GRAND TOTAL of 1000 minutes of missed instruction just by being late 5 minutes! That is almost 17 hours of school, or 2 1/2 days of school, missed because of being tardy by only 5 minutes. You see, it ADDS UP! So, please look at some of the tips below to be at school, on time, every day! Invest in success routines for your child(ren) and your family, it will pay off!
ATTENDANCE SUCCESS ROUTINE TIPS
- Get ready the night before (clothes picked out, backpack packed, water bottle filled, etc.)
- Get a good nights sleep (elementary aged children are recommended 9-12 hours of sleep)
- Develop a consistent nighttime routine (shower/bath, brush teeth, read, lights out as early as needed for a good nights sleep)
- Wake in plenty of time to be alert and get out the door on time
- Drop older children (Jr high/high school) first
- Consider having breakfast at school, beginning at 7:30 (BONUS: then you are never late!)
- Leave earlier and beat the traffic; there is more traffic the closer it gets to 8:00
Success Ruotines
PBIS
Our EAGLES have been practicing their SOAR expectations, especially in the hallways and in the MPR for lunch. We are making great progress! Here is what we are focusing on:
- Walking Feet
- Level Zero Voice
- Eyes Forward
Last but definitely not least, safety is paramount; safety of oneself and safety of others. We work on a daily basis to ensure that each student has safe behavior, uses safe words, and uses equipment and supplies safely. Your help in reiterating these same expectations with your child is greatly appreciated.
Pedestrian Safety
For everyone's safety: If you are parking and getting out to meet your student(s), PLEASE walk to the crosswalk to reach the sidewalk/grass area as well as using the crosswalk when returning to your car. In addition, please do not call to your student(s) to exit the curb and enter your car in the second lane; it is not safe. Your help in teaching our children to be safe around vehicles is a life lesson we all value. Drop off and pick up have been going pretty quickly; we appreciate your cooperation in helping to keep everyone SAFE!
Read Daily!
There are so many great ways to foster a love of reading and books! AND the power of reading daily is immense! Read TO your child; Read WITH your child; LISTEN to your child read; Read picture books; Read chapter books; Read magazines; Read comic books; Read anything and everything your child enjoys reading. Just READ, READ, READ!!!
Footsteps 2 Brilliance (preschool-3rd grade)
For our youngest becoming readers readers, we have an excellent free resources. The County of San Bernardino offers a free account for Footsteps to Brilliance to help students learn to read.
