Dragon News - 05.24.21
Principal's Message
This reminder is important enough to repeat and to put at the beginning of this week’s message. Next week is a four-day week so there is no Wednesday Advisory/Asynchronous schedule. This affects both in-person and CDL students.
- Monday, May 31: Memorial Day Holiday, Schools Closed
- Tuesday, June 1: Attendance Group 1, A Day
- Wednesday, June 2: Attendance Group 2, B Day
- Thursday, June 3: Attendance Group 1, B Day
- Friday, June 4: Attendance Group 2, A Day
Please read through the newsletter as it contains relevant information for the end of the school year, including dates for celebrations and how we will handle student chromebooks this year. In addition, you will soon be getting communications for library/school materials fines and fees that may still be on your accounts. It is important to clear your accounts, especially for graduating seniors.
You will have enjoyed a holiday weekend before the next newsletter is published. I hope you and your family have a fun, safe weekend and holiday. We all have COVID fatigue, but I believe that if we remain diligent with safety precautions, we will be able to experience a more normal school year in 2021-22. Though I won’t be with ISB next year, ISB will always be in my heart and I know students and staff are looking forward to learning and working together in person. In the meantime, your children are doing a wonderful job of helping us by staying masked and socially distanced. I really appreciate them!
Take care.
Sincerely,
Janice Adams

MYP Drive-Through Celebration
We were excited to welcome 10th grade students who earned their MYP Certificate and were able to attend the MYP Drive-Through Celebration on May 20. Students picked up their certificate, a Crumbl cookie, and had the opportunity to take a picture to celebrate. A big thank you to Crumbl Progress Ridge for helping us celebrate our students! Any 10th grader who was unable to attend will have their certificate and treat mailed home. Congratulations, 10th graders!
The Personal Project Showcase is digital this year! Students were asked to submit a short video highlighting their projects. You can browse the video here.
Student Chromebooks
6th to 11th Grade students who will be attending a BSD school in the fall should keep their Chromebook for the summer unless they prefer to turn it in.
Seniors will need to turn in their Chromebook (with power cord and stylus) to ISB by June 10th.
Any family using a district issued hotspot will need to return the hotspot to ISB by June 18th.
Any student whose device is damaged should send an email to shd@beaverton.k12.or.us that includes the following information as soon as possible:

Student Testing Reminders
If your student has registered to participate in OSAS (Oregon Statewide Assessment System) at ISB, here are a few reminders about testing dates and grade level/subjects, times, scores, and transportation:
Testing Date: May 26
6th Grade - ELA & Math
11th Grade - Science
Testing Date: June 9
8th Grade - Science
- Testing will begin at 11:30 am and conclude no later than 2:30 pm. If your student finishes before then, you are welcome to pick them up early.
- There will not be make-up tests this year. Students will need to finish their tests within the allotted time, there won't be extended or extra time.
- Because this year’s test has a sizable content reduction, individual student reports will not include detailed sub-scores, but will be limited to an overall score. We expect results to be published in ParentVUE in August.
- Testing will take place at ISB in the cafeteria.
- Lunch will NOT be provided, but granola bars and water will be available for students who need a snack break, or students can bring a snack from home.
- Transportation has been routed only for students who submitted a request via the online survey by the April 30 deadline.
- Routes and pick up/drop off times can be viewed in E-Link using your student’s 6 digit student ID number and birthdate in the mmddyyyy format.
- All health and safety protocols will be observed including mandatory mask wearing, social distancing, and hand sanitizing.
- On the day of testing, please ensure that students come to school well-rested and eat a healthy breakfast, bring fully charged Chromebooks with chargers, and headphones/earbuds.
If you have questions or concerns, please email our testing coordinator at lele_wang@beaverton.k12.or.us, or call our main office at 503-356-3690.
Oregon Students Still Have Time to Apply for the Oregon Promise Grant
The deadlines are June 1 for high school seniors and July 12 for GED® test graduates
The Higher Education Coordinating Commission’s Office of Student Access and Completion (OSAC ) encourages Oregon’s graduating high school seniors and GED® test graduates to apply for the Oregon Promise by the upcoming deadlines, even if they are still deciding on their college plans this fall. The Oregon Promise Grant is a state-funded grant for recent high school graduates and GED® test graduates to pay for tuition at Oregon’s 17 community colleges. Every student gets only one opportunity to apply for the grant, which is during their senior year or immediately after completing their GED®.
With the effects of the pandemic, many students and families are facing uncertainty related to their postsecondary education and training plans. Oregon Promise application numbers are currently lower than they were for prior graduating classes, and OSAC is working to ensure that every eligible student is aware of the upcoming deadlines. Students who are graduating from high school or receiving their GED® between March 1, 2021 and June 30, 2021 can still apply. High school graduates have until Tuesday, June 1 to apply and GED® test graduates have until Monday, July 12 to apply. The application process has two steps:
- Submit the Oregon Promise Grant Application and
- Submit the 2021-22 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Oregon Student Aid Application (ORSAA).
Applying for the grant does not bind a student to attending a particular college; they will only be asked to accept the award with their college if/when they enroll.
Juan Baez-Arevalo, Director of OSAC, says, “We hope that every student completing high school or the GED® applies for financial aid—starting with completing the FAFSA or the ORSAA and grant applications like the Oregon Promise—even if they are still considering their postsecondary education and training plans. Meeting the deadlines is critically important so students don’t miss out on grants and scholarships that could open doors for them.”
Last week, OSAC began awarding Oregon Promise grants for Class of 2021 students who have already submitted their application, but OSAC is still seeking additional applications from students who may begin community college this upcoming fall term.
The Oregon Promise Grant is now in its 6th year of awarding, established by the Oregon Legislature in 2015 to begin awarding funds to the Class of 2016. More information about the eligibility and awarding criteria of the Oregon Promise Grant, along with the application link, can be found online at www.OregonPromise.org. Schools, colleges, and partner organizations are encouraged to share this information with students and families.
Oregon Emergency Rent Assistance Program
The Oregon eviction protections are set to expire at the end of June. This means renters will need to pay back rent that's still due. The state started taking applications yesterday for additional rental assistance through the Oregon Emergency Rent Assistance Program. People are eligible if at least one person in the household had a financial impact from the pandemic (a lost job, decrease in income), and their household income is at or below 80% of the area's median income (about $77,000 for a family of 4 in the Portland metro area, or $51,000 in rural communities).
Tenants can be approved for up to 12 months of past-due rent, and three months' upcoming rent. The payments will go directly to landlords, property owners, and utility companies.
The money will be allocated based on need, so everyone who applies for the program will go through a review process.
Assistance is offered to all renters, regardless of citizenship or immigration status.
Here's a link to the application and information on how to apply:

Pandemic EBT Funds
Oregon has been approved to issue retroactive Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) funds for the 2020 -2021 school year. This will provide more than $550 million in food assistance for approximately 572,000 children in Oregon. Funds will begin going out in the US Mail in July 2021. Apply now for Meal Benefits at www.schoolcafe.com to be sure you are eligible for P-EBT funds!
Some households do not need to apply for P-EBT if they already qualify for free meals. Students in the following categories will automatically receive P-EBT funds. You DO NOT need to apply if ANY of the following are true:
- You receive SNAP or TANF benefits
- Your students qualify as Migrant, Foster, or Homeless
- You have already received a Meal Benefits approval letter for 2020-2021
- All of your students attend a CEP* (Community Eligibility Provision) school
*CEP Schools:
Aloha Huber Park
Barnes
Beaver Acres
Chehalem
Fir Grove
Greenway
Hazeldale
Kinnaman
McKay
McKinley
Merlo
Vose
William Walker
Some households DO need to apply for Meal Benefits by June 30, 2021 to be considered for P-EBT. Go to www.schoolcafe.com to apply if:
- You have any students at a non-CEP school
- You have not applied or been approved for Meal Benefits for the 2020-2021 school year
If you're not sure if your students are eligible, go to www.schoolcafe.com. From there, you can:
- Check your existing account for student eligibility
- Create a new account
- Apply for Meal Benefits
Qualifying for free or reduced meals for the 2020 –2021 school year before June 30, 2021 will ensure you receive P-EBT when the benefits are issued. P-EBT benefit eligibility and amounts will vary. Visit pebt.oregon.gov for more information.
