Willow Lane News Update
4th Edition: Winter (January-February)
SUPER BOWL SUNDAY
On Sunday one of the most watched events of the year took place in Phoenix, Arizona. The Seahawks and Patriots were battling to be the Super Bowl 49 champions. The final score only being 24-28 Patriots win, the last few plays were amazing!!! First, a 40-50 yard catch by Jermaine Kearse made my jaw drop. The next play was a run to Marshawn Lynch. Then, the Seahawks were at the 1 yard line, the score being 24 Seahawks 28 Patriots with 20 seconds left. A pass was thrown, and the Patriots' Malcolm Butler intercepted the pass! Everyone was yelling, "Patriots win!!!! Patriots win!!!!"
At half time Katy Perry put on an astonishing half time show with a giant tiger in the beginning to dancing beach balls palm trees and sharks in the middle and a shooting star to guide her through her hit song "Baby You're on Firework". With special appearances of Missy Eliot and Lenny Kravitz.
February 1st, 2015 may have been an important day for a couple of popular football teams, but did you know, there were "other bowls" that did not involve pigskin?

TROUT IN THE CLASSROOM UPDATE
by Evan
I’m here to update you on the trout; With all the craziness in the tank, you should really know. So, read the updatiness!
“Set 50, Set Set”
Set 50, set set is like riding a bike. You never forget. Well, at least for me it is.Mrs. Brill’s class asked if they can do the trout on Mondays. Of course, we said, “yes.” They asked if they could do it on Wednesday. Again, we said, “yes.” They did not really know what they were doing, so Mrs. Durigan sent some of us down to help. She sent me down to help the recorder. But, the recorder already knew what she was doing. So, I helped Ayan, which was Equipment Check.
Once we checked the temperature, we had frowns on our faces. The temperature was 47 degrees when the tank is supposed to be 52 degrees! Ayan told me to go up and tell Mrs. Durigan. I did, and she told me to set the temperature by going: set 50, set set. I walked down the stairs while saying in my head, “set 50 set set.” When I got down there, I tried and… nothing! Nothing!!!! I tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried! Within all of them chanting, “Set 50, set set.”
"Wintery Weather"
"Where I'm From" by Axel Balogh (5th grade)
From fragrant coconut oil in a spice filled pantry.
From golden birch wood furniture and glittering crystal bowls.
I am from the house with the bright blue door on the corner of Chardonnay--
cheerful and relaxing.
I’m from the smell of ginger and garlic wafting from the brimming pot of chicken soup,
the sweet, tart lingonberry sauce on hand made meatballs,
a large, fuzzy, black poodle greeting full of excited sniffs.
I am from the towering pine trees,
with boughs of snow drifting down.
I’m from saffron Swedish Lussebullar
I’m from generosity and helping and loving.
I am from Cassie and Jörgen.
I’m from “Struggle makes you stronger” and “Never give up.”
I’m from “Bä bä vita lamm,” sung by my mother in Farmor’s rocking chair.
I’m from sardine-packed on the sofa to watch a movie.
I’m from Sweden, Florida, Michigan, Louisiana, Pennsylvania and
Hungary and Finland.
I am from fresh strawberries with coconut cream and buttery hasselbak sweet potatoes.
From a young Morfar who fed the dairy cows and picked oranges that gleamed in the sun.
I am from rolling clear-cut blue waves and sparkling white sand, forever in my heart,
comforting my consciousness and soothing my soul.
The Read a Thon
Have you ever wondered where the idea for the Willow Lane Read a Thon came from? How does it work? Caroline did some investigatory reporting to answer these and many more questions.
"Can't Get to Sleep" A Continuation Story
Ariana Kompa
I knelt down next to Hammy’s cage…
… and peered in seeing nothing but darkness. Hmmm, she must have jumped off her wheel. As I gazed tiredly looking for her, I began to fall asleep. Suddenly, a scant white puff startled me as Hammy jumped back on her green wheel. Although I had a fan running in my room, I could still hear the wheel slamming against the cage. As the purple lava lamp’s glow suddenly struck the hamster, she looked purple! So did everything else around her. I sat there on the floor at the cage longer and longer observing the small creature until the jagged carpet made dents in my skin. I opened the top of the metal cage and leaned my head close, it smelled horrible, so I swiftly backed away. I had no choice but to hold my breath and place the wheel in the middle of the cage. I gave myself a mental high five since I solved the scratching noise she made as she ran on her wheel. I started to walk back to bed like a zombie. I glanced at the bright clock on my radio, 5:00 a.m. it said. It was almost time…...
Terrible Trout Catastrophe Part 2
If you have seen the last “Terrible Trout Catastrophe,” yeah… that one was bad, but this is a lot worse. We have a small amount of dead fish… … Okay okay okay, about 70 fish are… are under grave stones? Sure, yes, under grave stones. That will do…
Ryan The Superhero
If you have read the last article, you will know that Ryan saved the filter. It happened again. I was testing downstairs, Ryan was cleaning the tank, and then the sponge around the filter popped off! We were all in a hurry. We sent Mackenzie upstairs to tell Mrs. Durigan. But, Ryan the superhero put the sponge back on in no time. That sponge needs to be on there, you know. Also, you can tell he did it because he was soaked! His shirt was green, and his right shoulder to his hand was very dark green. Ryan had to go upstairs. I came along to tell Mackenzie that Ryan had placed it back on. She must have already seen Ryan, because she already knew. At the end of the day, Ryan was a mummy with paper towels!
Overeating
Have you ever eaten so much that you feel like you are going to explode? What if humans did explode when they ate too much? That would be gross, right? Well, baby trout may not explode, but overeating can be deadly.
While you have parts of your brain that communicate with your digestive system to put a halt to your eating, other animals do not. When you sit down in front of a holiday feast, you may overeat, but you don’t keep going until your body can’t take it. Some of our Trout in the Classroom did. Over the winter holiday break someone who was not as experienced with feeding the little fishies placed too much food in the tank. Animals in the wild never know when food will be available, and when it is, they gorge. Our fishy friends ate themselves into oblivion. Also, the extra food that was not eaten began to decay. This is what caused the “guck” to grow in the tank. Guck = yuck!
The next time you feel like you are going to explode from over eating thank your lucky stars you are not a trout!

Even getting this far...
Was no easy feat...
These spellers first had to win their classroom spelling bee...
Then…
The 3 top word warriors...
Made it to here...
The competition was tough...
And the words....
Even tougher...
One after another …
The spellers only got one chance to spell the word, though they could respell, but they could not change a letter.
The winning word...
Sentimental...
S - e - n - t - i - m - e - n - t - a - l...
Sentimental...
Mia..

(editor's note) I have to agree with Mrs. Durigan: Lin displays some incredibly kind, careful, best-self, and respectful behavior at the end of the spelling bee. Check out the movie to learn more about this event's conception, history, and creator.
