Burnette Blast
January 2022
Happy New Year!
Happy New Year to all our Burnette families! 2022 is going to be an amazing year!
This week the GCPS sent out a communication stating that the current plan is to return to in-person learning. However, they also shared, "District leaders will continue to monitor the current COVID situation and its impact on staffing to assess if high levels of unavailable staff might result in operational limitations that would require a move temporarily to a digital instruction model." We will also send out any updates or changes through text message, email, Social Media pages, and Class Dojo.
The district is also continuing to monitor the community transmission rate and its impact on our mask requirements. Due to the high transmission rate, masks are currently still required. Please continue to send your child to school with an appropriately fitted mask, and keep them at home if they are sick. We will also be limiting visitors that are allowed in the building. Students learn best when they are in school, so please do what you can to keep you and your family healthy and safe.
If you haven't already, please follow us on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter (links are at the bottom). We are posting updates and fun pictures each week that I know you will want to see! If there is anything I can do to support you, please don't hesitate to reach out: 678-546-2170, sally.lehmann@gcpsk12.org.
Your Proud Principal,
Dr. Sally Lehmann

Think First & Stay Safe Program
We all share a common goal for our children to be safe and protected from all things harmful. Related to that goal, school counselors are required to present annual personal safety lessons. The Think First & Stay Safe™ program is a research-based program that teaches specific personal safety education by way of interactive classroom lessons, slideshow, role-playing, and corresponding activities. During the months of January-April, Ms. Rivas, our school counselor will offer sexual abuse prevention and safety lessons to all K-5 students.
Additionally, related to the goal of creating a safe learning environment House Bill 198 requires that each school system adopt a policy that addresses student suicide prevention. Gwinnett County Public Schools uses Lifelines Prevention, an evidence-based curriculum, to educate students in grades 5, 7, and 9 on the facts about suicide and students’ role in suicide prevention. During the months of January-March, Ms. Rivas, will offer lessons from the Lifelines Prevention curriculum in our fifth-grade classes. Because one of the main objectives of this curriculum is to encourage our students to identify trusted adults in their lives to whom they can turn if they have concerns about themselves or their friends, we want to provide you with an outline of the four sessions to make it easier for you to talk with your child about these important lessons.
For more information about either of these curriculums, please contact your child's counselor, Holly Rivas (holly.rivas@gcpsk12.org) at 678-546-2178 to schedule a preview of the materials or if you have any questions or concerns. If you prefer that your child not participate in the sexual abuse (K-5th grade) and/or suicide prevention (5th grade only) lessons, please write and sign a note indicating your preferences and send it to Ms. Rivas.

Media Center Updates
THANK YOU to all of our BES families for supporting our book fair! We almost doubled our goal of selling 935 books - we sold 1,625 books! The money we make on the book fair helps support our reading program, facilitate author visits, purchase Makerspace technology, and of course, purchase BOOKS for the library!
Our next book fair will be to support reading over the summer and will take place May 9-13.
We hope all of our students got to pause and read over the break. If your child completed the green Winter Break reading challenge, you may continue to send those to school through next Friday, January 14 to earn the exclusive winter reading paw.
New reading challenges for our K-3 students will be sent home in Friday folders on January 14. Our 4th and 5th grade students can continue to work on earning the reading paws by reading the various genres. If you want to know more about the reading program, check out the All About Reading tab on the Media website! https://www.gcpsk12.org/domain/4305
