Welcome to First Grade!
2013
Dear Parents,
My name is Cathy Mere, and I will be your child’s teacher this year. I am looking forward to working with your child this school year. I received both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees from The Ohio State University (Go Bucks!), and am certified to teach grades 1-8 with a K-12 reading endorsement. I have taught many grade levels, worked as a literacy coach in our district, and taught Reading Recovery (a reading intervention program for first grade students who benefit from one-to-one intensive reading instruction).
My family lives in West Jefferson where my husband, Jeff, teaches 8th grade language arts. We have three children: Cortney, John, and Cassidy. Cortney is currently in North Carolina where she also teaches 8th grade language arts. John has just switched his major to education and has transferred to The Ohio State University. Cassidy is a senior at West Jefferson High School. We also have a dog (Trudy), a cat (Teaser) and lots of fish.
First grade is a fun year. The kids are always excited to finally get to eat lunch at school, have recess, and go to specials which include art, music, and gym. One of my favorite things about first grade is the growth in understanding that children demonstrate as the year progresses. First grade is a big year for learning to read, growing as writers, working as mathematicians, developing citizenship, and learning scientific processes. Additionally, we use technology quite a bit in our classroom. Your child will work using Kidblog, VoiceThread, Shelfari (class account), Weebly and a variety of applications to support our learning.
I am looking forward to another great year at Darby Creek. Darby Creek is a wonderful community, and I hope you will find our classroom to be a reflection of that. If at any time in the school year you have concerns, please give me a call (921-5500) or send a note/e-mail (cathy_mere@hboe.org) so I can answer your questions or schedule a time to sit down and talk. Most of our classroom community links, news, and updates will be kept on our website: Merely Learning Together.
Sincerely,
Cathy Mere
