Omaha Fashion Week 4-H Collection
Over the last 10 years, Omaha Fashion Week has grown to the nation’s 5th largest fashion event. In addition to supporting more independent fashion designers than any other organization in the region, Omaha Fashion Week supports young fashion designers by providing mentoring, educational opportunities, and a professional platform to showcase work.
Nebraska 4-H is once again partnering with Omaha Fashion Week during their Spring Showcase. OFW Student Night will take place on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 and will exclusively feature student designers, including a 4-H collection. This collection will consist of 10 to 12 garments from across the state. Each garment will be modeled by the 4-H member who made it. In order to create a complete and dynamic collection, interested 4-H members are invited to apply to participate in the show. The 4-H collection will be curated based on the selection criteria as listed below.

Ag Innovators Opportunity
In 2018, 5,000 youth from across these states will participate in the “Monarch on the Move Challenge”, an educational activity focusing on the importance of biodiversity to agriculture, specifically as related to monarch butterfly habitats. The Monarch on the Move Challenge will engage youth as researchers as they simulate the needs of a caterpillar identifying the many factors that play a role in their reproduction and survival. Then, using given land plot samples, teams will design effective agricultural practices that promote biodiversity. Teams will be challenged to provide evidence to support their strategies. When possible, learning venues will engage participants in a seed planting, exemplifying how everyone can contribute to biodiversity which, ultimately, helps secure food production for a growing world population.
In Nebraska, we are looking for 20 teens (we can take more) to help us teach this program across the state to reach our state goal of 1000 youth. Let Megan or Tanya know if you would like to participate!
ESI Capitol Contest
We are excited to announce the 2018 ESI Capitol Contest to be held at the Nebraska State Capitol on January 17, 2018.
This is a wonderful opportunity for our young entrepreneurs to share what business ideas they have developed, talk with Legislative officials, tour the capitol, receive special recognition from the legislative body and perhaps go home with a cash prize from the competitive event!
Look over the attached Contest Rules and Information. As soon as possible, please share this information with your aspiring young entrepreneurs and their families and teachers. Due to space limitations, only 18 students or student teams will be accepted to compete on the 17th.
Please note, the deadline for application is December 15. Application is available online at https://go.unl.edu/g4mg
Volunteer Opportunities for FIRST LEGO League
Have you heard of FIRST LEGO League? FIRST LEGO League introduces students in Grades 4-8 to real-world engineering challenges by building LEGO-based robots to complete tasks on a thematic playing surface. FIRST LEGO League teams, guided by their imaginations and adult coaches, discover exciting career possibilities and, through the process, learn to make positive contributions to society.
The FIRST LEGO League program is well underway for the 2017-2018 "HYDRO DYNAMICS” Season. In this season’s challenge, the human water cycle describes the ways people find, transport, use, and dispose of water in order to meet a specific need or desire.
For the Project teams will need to:
- Identify a problem within the human water cycle.
- Design a solution that makes this problem better.
- Share the problem and solution with others.
So are you interested? Because we would love to have you volunteer for one of our events! More information can be found at https://4h.unl.edu/first-robotics/volunteer.
