Week Of December 15th

Highlights from last week....

We were learning machines, even with the snow day. I have been assessing our friends and they are really moving along in all academic areas. Thank you for your continuous support at home, we could not be successful without you!

In Phonics, we learned the sight words "no" and "me", please practice these words at home. As I mentioned last week, the majority of our friends know their letters, so we no longer will be focusing on one specific letter for the week. There are still some children that are still struggling with their letters and these friends will be working with me and other teachers during small group time to master their letters. This week we really practiced recognizing beginning and ending sounds, rhyming words, writing words using letter sounds, tapping out words and sounding out nonsense words. I am so proud of how far our friends have come since September!

In Math, we continued our unit on measurement. We compared length, height and weight this week. I sent home the parent information that was provided by our program. I also attached the rubric that we will use during the assessment so that you can see how your child will be graded. I hope this helps!

In Social Studies, we learned about how different people celebrate holidays in December and how they relate to light. We discussed Hanukkah and enjoyed latkes. Our friends were hesitant to try them at first, but then LOVED them after they tasted them.

In our Second Step program, we continued to learn about our own feelings. We created a "Safe Hand" Club to help our children remember to keep our hands to ourselves. Our goal is to have everyone stay in the club. Club members exhibit safe hand behavior (not hitting, not pushing, not kicking, etc). So far, everyone is a "club member"!

We read several fun Hanukkah books. During these read alouds we practiced some of our strategies that we are learning in our retelling unit.

A peek at our learning this week....

We are going to be very busy learning this week.

In Phonics, we will learn the sight words "you" and "and", please practice these words at home. This week we really practiced recognizing beginning and ending sounds, rhyming words, writing words using letter sounds, tapping out words and sounding out nonsense words. I will be sending home a set of flashcards for you to practice over vacation.

In Reader's Workshop, we will learn a strategy of using multiple clues when we come to a tricky word. A strategy that good readers use is to think about what we read. When we sound out the letters in the word and the word we say doesn't make sense or sound right, we will learn that we need to stop and do some reading work. We need to ask ourselves, "Does that make sense?", "Does that sound right?" and "Do the letters match?"

In Math, we will continue our unit on measurement. Our focus this week will be on weight. We will use our balance scales and compare weight by using the words "heavier" and "lighter".

In Social Studies, we will learn about how different people celebrate holidays in December and how they relate to light. This week we will be discussing Christmas and discuss the light of giving.

In our Second Step program, we will continue to learn about our own feelings.

We will read several fun books about Christmas. During these read alouds we will be practicing some of our strategies that we are learning in our retelling unit.

Holiday Book Swap

We will be having a holiday party on December 19th. In light of the holiday and literacy, we will be participating in a holiday book swap. Your child will pick another child's name and they will buy a book for that child. A notice was sent out on Friday. The dollar value on the books will be between $1.00 and $5.00 (Ocean State Job Lot and Dollar Tree have a great selection for low cost). If it is a hardship and this is not feasible for you, please let me know in advance. I always have extra books that your child can choose and give to their classmate. If you would like to provide a snack, please let me know.
