Reader's Reef
1. Reading graphic novels (GNs) helps readers develop empathy. The images in graphic novels provide powerful visual clues that make it easier for readers to relate to characters and imagine how they would feel in a given situation.
2. GNs allow students to engage with a more challenging text. Reluctant readers typically do NOT want to check out a full length text novel written on their reading level. However, give them a similar novel that looks like a comic book and they are totally on-board. When students enjoy reading complex and compelling stories, they are motivated to read more. This allows GNs to serve as a stepping stone to longer text only books.
3. GNs "level the academic playing field." Because struggling readers may be given easier texts in an attempt to provide material that is on their level, these students may miss a chance to flex their intellectual muscles. Because reading proficiency is not an indicator of intelligencs, GNs provide the opportunity for readers and "nonreaders" to participate in reading conversations, discussing complex issues, themes, and characters.
4. GNs build comprehension and critical thinking skills. When reading a GN, the reader must read the words AND the pictures. They must also analyze how the two go together, which is a critical thinking skill.
5. GNs get students excited about reading. Studies show GNs are a preferred format regardless of gender or reading ability. They are also a good pick for students who speak English as a second language.
The SJM LLC has a wide selection of graphic novels. We also have the graphic novels that complement standards taught in the classes. GNs about dinosaurs, the Alamo, and diseases are shelved amid graphic novel series.
