Gifted & Talented Professional Learning
Fall courses for initial and update credit will be open from September 1st - January 4th. You must register in Eduphoria Strive AND enroll in the Canvas course. Links are provided in the course descriptions. Credits will not be awarded until after the course closes on January 4th.
Secondary G/T administrators should complete 6-hours of G/T training annually. Secondary counselors should first complete Parts 1 & 2 of the initial series and then complete the 6-hour update each year. Professional learning requirements for G/T teachers can be found below. G/T Initial Series 30-Hour Training Part 1
This online course is designed for participants seeking their Secondary G/T initial series (30 hours) training. Participants will consider state expectations for gifted education, explore the unique needs of gifted learners, and reflect on current instructional and program practices.
G/T Initial Series 30-Hour Training Part 2
This online course is designed for participants seeking their Secondary G/T initial series (30 hours) training. Participants will learn about the LISD identification and referral process and policies as well as how to recognize characteristics of potential giftedness in students.
G/T Initial Series 30-Hour Training Part 3
This online course is designed for participants seeking their Secondary G/T initial series (30 hours) training. Participants will consider the social emotional needs of gifted learners and learn how to recognize and support gifted underachievers.
G/T Initial Series 30-Hour Training Part 4
This online course is designed for participants seeking their Secondary G/T initial series (30 hours) training. Participants will consider how they can provide their gifted learners with opportunities to explore content with depth and complexity.
G/T Initial Series 30-Hour Training Part 5
This online course is designed for participants seeking their Secondary G/T initial series (30 hours) training. Participants will consider how they can differentiate instruction to better meet the needs of their gifted learners.
G/T Update for Secondary Counselors & Administrators
Participants in this course will review LISD policy and procedures regarding G/T referrals, transfers, and services. Participants will also explore how they can recognize and support gifted underachievers, address gifted learners' social-emotional needs, and increase parent and community involvement related to their gifted students.
G/T 6-hour Update - Book Study: THINKING LIKE A LAWYER
To compete in our rapidly changing global marketplace, critical thinking is the essential tool for ensuring students fulfill their promise. Thinking Like a Lawyer introduces a powerful but practical framework to give teachers the tools and knowledge to teach critical thinking to all students. Colin Seale, a teacher-turned-attorney-turned-education-innovator and founder of thinkLaw, uses his unique experience to introduce a wide variety of concrete instructional strategies and examples that teachers can use in all grade levels and subject areas.
G/T 3-hour Update - Empowering Gifted Learners
How can we maximize the strengths of our gifted learners to ensure they have the skills necessary for a successful future? In this online course, participants will consider how to use meaningful feedback, appropriate scaffolds, and student-centered lessons to grow the self-agency and self-efficacy of their gifted learners.
G/T 6-hour Update - Differentiation: Why Gifted Students Need It and How Teachers Can Provide It
This course will explore the importance of differentiating instruction for gifted learners and deepen participants' understanding of what differentiation is and is not. Participants will learn how to plan lessons differentiated by readiness, interest, and learning profile as well as options for differentiating content, process, and product. Additionally, we will consider how teachers can guide classroom experiences that ignite imaginations, drive discourse, and extend high-ability and high-potential learning.
G/T 3-hour Update - Opening Doors in Gifted Education
While many districts and states have made improvements in identifying and serving a broader range of advanced students, there remains much to be done to ensure that all high-ability students receive appropriate gifted education services to meet their needs. Participants in this course will listen to four (4) different podcast episodes that highlight the challenges of underserved populations, their success stories, and strategies for opening doors that are often closed to many children and young adults.
G/T 6-hour Update - Initial Series Reboot
Participants in this course will review learning presented in Parts 1-5 of the LISD G/T Initial Series. Participants will receive foundational training in the nature and needs of gifted learners, identification & assessment, social-emotional needs, depth & complexity, as well as an introduction to differentiation.
