News This Week
Update: Our skills and vocabulary this week are slightly different that what it listed on the Unit 1 sheet you have in your folder. Please check below for vocabulary and Social Studies. We will use our Studies Weekly this week in place of a reading story.
Homework - Students are responsible for writing their homework on their calendar in the folder.
Test Folders - Please remember to sign folders when sending them back. This lets me know you saw the work!
Snow Wizard - Tuesday - Our first Snow Wizard is Tuesday. This is $1 snow cone snack at PE. If you did not prepay Snow Wizard online already, you will need to send $1 if your child will have snow wizard. Students are responsible for keeping track of their money and taking it to PE.

Studies this Week
- Skills: Main Idea & Detail
- Phonics: Long Vowel Digraphs /ai/ /ay/ /ea/ /ee/ /oa/ /ow/
- Vocabulary: no skill - these words are all needed to know and understand to correctly answer questions and discuss work in 3rd grade
- Practice at home: Read a magazine or newspaper article and decide what the main ideas is. Students have a hard time finding support for the main idea - they should find sentences that gave them clues this is the main idea.
- Practice at home: Write an opinion and then write three sentences that support that opinion.
Spelling
- Practice spelling and writing words. Visit spellingcity.com/meverette for more practice.
- Words this week: clean, agree, teeth, dream, grain, coach, display, window, shadow, cheese, peach, braid, Sunday, float, thrown, entertain, complain, bleachers, willow, wheat
Math
- Addition & Subtraction
- Subtraction facts - over and under 100
- Facts - we are working on basic facts. Students can use flashcards or online tools to get faster with these. Addition and subtraction should be quick by 3rd grade. If your child knows these, it is ok to start working on multiplication, but they should know addition and subtraction first!
Vocabulary
Vocabulary words are on our weekly reading test. Students should know what each word means.
- Main idea, detail, recount, evidence, support (in terms of supporting details, supporting your claim), chronological order, history, primary sources, secondary sources, article
Writing & Grammar
- Commands and Exclamations
Exclamations = shows feeling
- Writing - students will work on writing an opinion piece with a topic sentence, supporting details, and a conclusion. We will work on this type of writing for several weeks.
Science
- Rocks - classifying and sorting
- Weather - tools, types, clouds
Social Studies
- Studies Weekly - What Time is It? Historical Time and Timelines
- Students can logon to Studies Weekly at home by going to studiesweekly.com
