Dear Parents & Friends of SFCS,

There are just a few days left before the students and faculty break for Thanksgiving Recess. I know I can speak on behalf of the entire faculty and staff of SFCS that we are profoundly thankful for the blessing of working with the children in our school community on a daily basis!!!

We have a few events coming up in just our two days together next week. The 5th graders in perform their play, The Case of the Missing Parts of Speech on Monday. Also on Monday we will have our season openers for our girls and boys senior basketball teams who will be playing against Blessed Sacrament of Savannah. Go Wolves!!!

Safe travels to everyone traveling this week for Thanksgiving!!!

2nd Grade

The 2nd graders were treated to a trip to the South Carolina Charleston Aquarium on Monday as their award for being the first class to fill their container with plastic bottle caps in October. Not only were they the first to fill up their container they were the class that collected the most caps for October with collecting 13,374 plastic caps. So they were also treated to a pizza party on the way home from the aquarium at Andolini's Pizza. The students had a great time and learned a lot about how important our collection of the caps is for our oceans and environment. It must have worked because the 2nd grade has filled their container again for the month of November!!!

4th Grade

The 4th grade students were working on their saint projects this week and peer collaboration in math.

5th Grade

The fifth graders are studying food chains in science. They made posters of three different kinds of food chains.

Discovery Lab - Kindergarten

This week the K students talked about why leaves change colors in the fall. We discovered that those colors were always there but the green we see in warmer weather goes away when the weather gets cooler and the days get shorter. We sorted leaves into groups, graphed their colors and wrapped up class by making a scratchboard of a beautiful fall leaf.

Discovery Lab - 1st Grade

The 1st Grade finished a pattern lesson that they started last week and made figures using the patterns of the student's choosing. They also looked a the reason leaves change colors in the fall. When the daylight shortens and the temperatures drop the green chlorophyll breaks down and they see the beautiful colors that were always there but were hidden by the green. Students represented this process by making a scratch board of a leaf changing from green to red, yellow, and orange.

Discovery Lab - 3rd Grade

This week the 3rd grade continued their study of electricity by looking at another application of it's energy. They built and tested electromagnets and discovered that there is a relationship between the number of coils around the metal core and the ability of the electromagnet to pick up paperclips. They also discovered the importance of solid connections in the circuit and this gave them the opportunity to practice their troubleshooting skills.

This year SFCS will be going through their accreditation internal review. As part of being a fully accredited SACS school through Cognia, formerly AdvancED, SFCS is reviewed interally by the Catholic Schools Office of the Diocese of Charleston. Part of the process is to collect survey responses from parents, students, faculty and community members. The data collected from your responses are used in the internal review process to assist SFCS in strategic planning and school improvement. JPIICS News!!!

Congrats to John Paul II Catholic School 7th grader Kathleen Hammett! Her poster has been selected to represent JPII in the Lions International Peace Poster Contest, “Journey of Peace.”

“I am very proud to have Kathleen’s poster represent JPII in the Sun City Lions Club poster contest,” said JPII art and technology teacher, Cadra Rooney. “Her interpretation of the theme was not only beautiful but symbolic of our Catholic beliefs and identity.”

All 7th grade students currently enrolled in MS Art created a poster with only one poster from the class being selected to be entered into the contest. Kathleen’s poster will soon compete with posters from other area schools.

To learn more about JPII, mark your calendars for the school’s annual Open House on Sunday, January 26, from 12 – 2pm. Prospective families are invited to presentations and campus tours. Sunday Mass will be at 11am in the Athletic Center for anyone wishing to attend.
