Neighborhood Parade

We've received several questions regarding Hardy's participation involving teacher parades and caravans in the neighborhood. Please know that we miss our Hardy Mustangs tremendously and LOVE seeing their smiling faces on Zoom and Google Hangouts. Teachers send pictures of their Zoom or Hangout sessions daily via staff email and teacher's heartfelt messages of compassion and joy continue throughout the course of the night! We LOVE and MISS our babies!!! However, as a staff, we decided to air on the side of safety and complete a video instead of a parade. This way, you're able to view the video as often as you like and everyone is safe. Once we receive less restrictions, ALL students and families will be invited to attend a "Hardy Family Reunion" to reconnect and say goodbye to our 4th graders. We encourage your family to follow the CDC guidelines for keeping safe and minimizing the spread of COVID-19. “Social distancing” means staying out of crowded places, avoiding group gatherings, and maintaining a distance of 6 feet from others whenever possible.

Parents may pick-up their child's medication on April 1st and April 2nd from 8 AM to 11 AM and 1 PM to 4PM by appointment only. If your child has medication at school, please request an appointment time by emailing or calling Nurse Cowan at ncowan@iwcs.k12.va.us or calling the school and leaving a message. Please be sure to include your name, your child's first and last name and a contact number. The nurse will return your call to confirm your appointment time. At your appointment time, the school nurse will meet you for a drive-thru pick up in front of the building near the main office. Please be sure to bring a photo ID to confirm your identity. Additional opportunities to pick up your child's medication may be available before Wednesday, April 8th. Please email Nurse Cowan for more information. Lastly, please do not come to the school if you are ill.

Student Belongings

Requested student belongings will be placed in a sealed bag and stored in a bin with the teacher's name on the top. All bins will be placed on the sidewalk from 8AM - 4PM starting on Wednesday, 4/1 to Friday , 4/3 for parent pick-up. Please email your child's teacher if you have questions or concerns.

IWCS Elementary Academic Plan

As we approach the end of the second week of school closures, we have an update for you on plans for continued learning throughout the remainder of the academic year.


Instruction March 30th - April 10th- For students in grades Kindergarten through 4th grade, students will complete grade specific 5C challenges created by our Instructional Coaches. The 5 C's--critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity, and citizenship--are a focus of Virginia’s Profile of a Graduate and the Isle of Wight County Schools’ Strategic Plan. These activities will continue to engage students from March 30 through April 10. Isle of Wight County Schools will be recognizing the week of April 13 as spring break and, as such, no instructional activities are planned for that week. We will, however, be continuing our feeding program during this time.


Instruction April 20th - June 11th- Beginning on Monday, April 20, students will begin new learning. Details for new learning will be shared with all families next week. Our teachers will be using the time between now and April 20th to plan for new learning.


Administration and Teacher Office Hours- Beginning on Monday, April 20, teachers will have designated office hours for 1 hour each day. This time is set aside for parents to contact teachers or teachers to contact parents regarding instructional expectations. A schedule with teacher office hours will be shared in the coming weeks.

5 C's Challenge

As shared above, students will be completing a 5C challenge for the next two weeks. A PDF copy of the challenge is attached directly below the picture to print from home. However, we will have copies available for pick-up outside the school starting at 9AM on Monday, 3/30.

Virtual School Counseling

During this time of change, our children can become anxious about what lies ahead. Your child's school counselor, Mrs. Gilchrist, has customized a resource that focuses on social and emotional learning.


Course Description: This particular module will educate elementary students on the importance of eating well, staying fit, and making healthy decisions through fun, interactive games.

Coronavirus Update: Connect 5 Message sent to Parents on March 18, 2020

Information for Parents on Instructional Plans During School Closure

We understand that this unprecedented situation has left many families stuck between their roles as employees and the need to assist students with ongoing learning, and we sincerely appreciate your efforts.


The purpose of the assignments is to provide opportunities to keep students engaged while reinforcing information previously covered in class. We hope to keep students’ brains active to maintain communication between students and teachers. Teachers will not be grading the assignments but they may provide feedback on the work. It also provides the teacher an opportunity to see areas where students may need additional reinforcement.


The assignments should not create anxiety or stress for students or families. If your child is having trouble with a particular problem or concept, have them move on to another section. We recognize this situation is highly unusual and we must remain flexible and fluid in our expectations of students. Our teachers are monitoring their email daily and you can reach out to them if you have questions. If you do not have access to email, you can call your child’s school and leave a message for Mrs. Denson at 757-357-3204

Meal Distribution Update

Isle of Wight County Schools has modified several meal distribution locations throughout the county. Meals are available for ALL students regardless of the household income.


Meals will now be distributed at the following locations:


  • Zuni Presbyterian Church instead of the Zuni Citgo
  • Windsor Manor instead of the Windsor Ruritan Club
  • The Nest apartments in Carrollton will have their own distribution site.

Meals will be available from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday through Friday at Smithfield High School, Georgie Tyler Middle School, and Carrsville Elementary School. In addition, our school buses will be delivering meals to the following areas throughout the county daily, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.


In the northern areas of the county:

  • Jersey Park Apartments
  • Bradford Mews Apartments
  • Smithfield Apartments (Hardy teachers will distribute meals)

Preschool Registration

Early Childhood Preschool

Program Overview- The program addresses their physical, academic, social, and emotional needs. The Learning Center operates on a full day schedule and follows the Isle of Wight County School calendar. Transportation is provided by the school division. Building Readers- March Edition

  • Every student is REQUIRED to read at least 30 minutes every night. Hardy elementary currently has a homework practice in place that only consist of nightly reading. This is the homework assignment on most nights from teachers.   • Reading every day is very important for your child’s continued growth. Children that read for at least 1 hour a day will grow more than 2 years during the school year. Please encourage your child to read for at least 30 minutes (2 steps) a day.

General School Information


  • School hours are 8:55 AM -3:45 PM. Students can arrive starting at 8:35 AM. Students may not be dropped off prior to 8:35 AM. If you bring your child to school after 8:55 AM, you must escort them inside to the office and complete a tardy slip.

  • Please see nurse Nancy Cowan for prescription medicine intake. All medicine must be accompanied by a parent and include a physician’s prescription. Students are not allowed to transport medicine to school.

  • Breakfast is served in the classroom starting at 8:35 AM each morning. You may upload money onto your child’s account at https://www.k12paymentcenter.com/ or send in cash or a check.

  • Please don’t forget to complete and turn in the school lunch form. The class with the most forms submitted will receive a special treat from the cafeteria.

Behavior Expectations


Parents, as we enter the 2nd quarter of the school year, please review the following behavior expectations with your child. Our goal is to help build life long relationships with our students by modeling GREAT citizenship on a daily basis. We are continuing our behavior expectations of Growth, Respect, Empathy, Accountability and Trustworthiness; however, we are specifically defining how these characteristics look in each location within the building (such as hallways, restrooms, offices, cafeteria, playground/school grounds, bus etc.).

  • The G.R.E.A.T expectations document is based on a proactive behavior model approach which teaches the behaviors, reinforces and recognizes students who are able to model these behaviors and has systems in place to support students who have a difficult time or may present with more challenging behaviors.
  • Behavioral expectations are clearly defined- GREAT- Growth, Respect, Empathy, Accountability and Trustworthiness- for various settings and taught to all students in the school.
  • Once appropriate behaviors have been defined and taught, they are acknowledged in various ways on a regular basis. Specifically, the stable to purchase items or house points.
  • Every person who works in the school is aware of the behavioral expectations and works to ensure students are consistently getting the same message, regardless of the setting they are in or the adult they come in contact with.
  • Individual support is provided for students not responding to the school- wide system. Our school has a system for developing plans for individual students who may have a difficult time and need more support in a school setting. Parents will be notified if their child is in need of the above support(s)

Active support by all stakeholders is imperative. The entire school community is needed in order to make this system successful. Our new behavior system is a building-wide behavior program for establishing a positive school culture.
