CJHS Newsletter

February and March 2016

From the Principal

Dear Parents,

As is typical in Michigan, I am not sure what to expect of the weather anymore. I feel like I should be writing for the April/May newsletter judging by the temperatures outside. What is consistent and what can be expected, is the hard work by our students and staff. We are now into the second semester, which brings about new classes and new content for the students to think and learn about. As our school works with our students, we are continuing to develop them as thinkers, learners, and contributors. Our teachers are developing lessons and projects that support these ideas, and I am amazed everyday to see what our students are producing in relation to their learning. It is always exciting to be in the classroom watching the students in different activities experiencing learning.

To help with thinking and learning, we are trying to help our students develop a growth mindset. This is something you can help us with at home. Instead of our students saying “I am not good at this,” we want them to say “What am I missing?”. Instead of saying “This is too hard”, we want them to say “I will use what I have learned to accomplish this”. Instead of thinking “It’s good enough”, we want them to think “Is this really my best?”. Instead of them getting down about their mistakes, we want them to see that mistakes can help them improve. Ideas like these are what will help our students move forward in their learning, and will suit them long after they have left our schools.

As we move into February and March, the scheduling season begins in preparation for the 2016-2017 school year. The students have and will be completing their educational development plans (EDPs) which will help guide them in their course selections. The counselors from both CJHS and CHS will be making presentations to students during the school day February 23 for 9th grade students and March 1 for 8th grade students, as well as night programs for parents, February 22 for 9th grade parents and February 29 for 7th and 8th grade parents. These meetings are very informative and I highly recommend attending if your schedule allows. As usual, if you have any questions throughout any part of the process, do not hesitate to seek the information that you need to help your student make the best informed decisions about their schedule.

Again, I thank you for your continued support of our school. We hope that you are seeing the same growth in your student as we have so far this school year. As we complete the scheduling process and begin the master schedule, we will continue to look at ways to make this the best possible learning experience for all of our students. I look forward to working with you and our students in this regard, and if you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact me.

PTA

It’s hard to believe that the year is halfway over & that the second semester has begun. December and January have been relatively quiet months in the world of the CJHS PTA. However, we do have a few things to share:

Please join us at our next meeting…Friday, February 12, 2016 at 9 a.m. We still have some Ways and Means money to spend, and we would value your input on how our remaining funds should be spent.

Best regards,

Meg Knowlson

CJHS PTA President

PTA Reflections

PTA REFLECTIONS

Twenty-one (21) submissions were received from our CJHS students for the National PTA Reflections contest. The entries have been judged locally and then sent on to the state. We will communicate the results from the state in the spring once they are known. A big “THANK YOU” to CJHS PTA 2nd VP & Reflections Chair, Jennifer Billings, for all the hard work and time that she put into coordinating & organizing the Reflections Contest at CJHS.

Music News

Choirs are busy preparing for Vocal Solo and Ensemble on February 13th at Geisler Middle School in Walled Lake. Select students are preparing two pieces to memorize and present before a judge. On March 8th the junior high choirs will travel to Hartland High School to perform at our annual MSVMA District IV Choir Festival. The choirs are preparing two pieces to present to a panel of judges. The students will also sight read at this festival, which means they are given a piece of music they have never seen before and sing it to the best of their ability.

Social Studies Presents......

The 9th grade Social Studies teachers of CJHS are pleased to announce that the annual World War II Era Speaker Event will be Wednesday, February 24th. All 9th grade students will have a chance to learn more about World War II from people who were there, but WE NEED YOUR HELP! If you know anyone who would be willing to come speak to 9th graders at CJHS about how World War II effected their life, please contact Mrs. Murray at LLMurray@clarkston.k12.mi.us. This truly memorable event for students has been possible for eight years and we are hopeful that with your support, it will be possible again this year.

Leaders of the Pack

Every month, teachers will be nominating students who demonstrate perseverance, citizenship, and kindness for the "Leaders of the Pack" award. These students consistently exemplify outstanding character traits and positively influence the CJHS community.

Congratulations to the December winners:
