Teaching Tolerance: How to Implement Anti-bias Instruction
Social Justice Teaching 101 Workshop
Participants will explore practical strategies for accomplishing academic and social-emotional goals side by side. They will discuss learning conditions that honor all identities and reflect diversity, equity and justice. After exploring ready-to-use materials, applying rigorous standards and planning ways to incorporate research-based teaching practices, participants will leave the workshop with ideas, tools and resources for transforming their classrooms and schools.
Participants will learn to:
- Incorporate the Teaching Tolerance Social Justice Standards to create and sustain classroom and school environments that honor diversity, equity, and justice
- Speak up - and teach students to speak up - against bias and injustice
- Build a collaborative and respectful learning community with a diverse group of learners and educators

REGISTRATION CLOSES at 3 pm FRIDAY, JANUARY 24, 2020.
Time: 8:30 am - 3:30 pm (with 1 hour lunch; registration begins at 8:00 am)

Why Teach Social Justice?
Social Justice 101
What time should I arrive at the training site? Check-in begins 30 minutes prior to the start of the session, so be sure to arrive in plenty of time to complete the check-in and find a seat.
Food & Beverage: Coffee, bottled water and assorted breakfast bars will be available at the beginning of each session. Additional assorted small snacks will be available in the afternoon, and soda is available to purchase for $0.50 from the front desk administrative assistant.
Lunch will be on your own. Please plan accordingly.
What You Should Bring: Participants should bring note taking materials and writing utensils with them to the session. You may want to bring a laptop, iPad, or Chromebook with you, as well.
Cancellations received up to five (5) business days prior to the date of the workshop will not be responsible for any registration cost. Cancellations received less than the five days prior to the event will be responsible for 50% of the registration fee. Individuals who register and are "no show" will be responsible for the full registration fee.
Unless Champaign County is under a Level 2 or 3 "Snow Emergency," the Madison-Champaign ESC and its workshops are still operating business as usual. If you need to cancel, please do so ASAP. Unfortunately, in most cases, the cancellation policy remains in effect.
