Family Inquirer
Week of 1/25/21
Greetings ICEF Innovation Families,
We hope that all of you are staying safe and healthy. Over the next week, students will continue to test in both Reading and Math. Please make sure that they are in a quiet place where they can focus. Students are to take their tests independently. Please do not help them. We want to gather data on their current performance and can only do so, if they test alone.
Please also make sure that your children are in attendance EVERYDAY! It is important during this testing period, but is important in general, so they receive all of the learning being delivered by their teachers.
Be sure to read the Inquirer in its entirety. If you have any questions, please reach out to the main office.
Have a WONDERFUL week!

ICEF Innovation Staff Spotlight
Ms. Jewell, Community Relations Coordinator
I am a mother of 2 biological children and 3 foster and adopted children. I have 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. I am a true believer in helping children in need and raising all of my kids has brought me joy and contentment (well most of the time.) I love weekend movie/series binges and I am an avid DIY crafter. The pandemic has challenged my patience and sanity but I am an optimistic person so I am looking forward to a better 2021.

We've been told because of COVID 19 guidelines, the order process for Valentine's Day is different this year. The last day to order will be Friday, 1/29/21. This doesn't give us our usual 2 weeks to purchase but the process is easier. Now you can send the attached link to all of your family and friends across the country because they can order online and their items will be sent directly to their home. Please put the link on your Social Media to reach as many people as possible to support ICEF Innovation. Feel free to call the main office if you have any questions (323) 290-6997.

School-Wide Expectations
Academics
STEM, Music, Art, & P.E. Classes: (ICEF Core Values of COMMITMENT, COMMUNITY, EQUITY, and GROWTH)
It is important that your children attend their STEM, Music, Art, and P.E. live sessions. Your child's teacher should have shared the scheduling for each of these sessions with you. If they have not, please ask!
Intervention Groups and Office Hours: (ICEF Core Values of COMMITMENT, COMMUNITY, EQUITY, and GROWTH)
If your child has been invited to an intervention group or teacher office hours, please make sure they attend. These opportunities are not being offer to every student, so if your child has been invited, it is very important they attend, so they can get the additional support from the teacher. If you have questions about the invitation, please reach out to your child's teacher directly, or to the main office. Attendance will be tracked!
Elementary Virtual Learning Schedule Change: (ICEF Core Values of COMMITMENT, EQUITY, and GROWTH)
The virtual learning schedules have changed. There are two different schedules now. One for (TK-2) and one for (3-5). 25 minutes have been added onto both schedules to make time for direct instruction in Phonics (K-2), and Writing (3-5). An additional 40 minutes has been added to the (3-5) schedule dedicated to SBAC preparation. SBAC is the state standardized assessment that all (3-5) grade students will take in May. Please see the updated schedules linked here (TK-2) and here (3-5) Please prepare for your children to be in their live session for an extended time.
Black Lives Matter in Education Week: (ICEF Core Values of COMMUNITY, EQUITY, and GROWTH)
February 1st-5th is Black Lives Matter in Education Week. Our Language and Literacy Specialist, Ms. Clark, has compiled some activities for students. Some teachers may do some of the activities with their classes, but we encourage you to review them as well, with your children, if you so choose.
Books Drop-Off: (ICEF Core Values of COMMUNITY, COMMITMENT and EQUITY)
The book drop-off has been postponed until the STATE has lifted the Stay At Home order. Please make sure that students are keeping their school reading books in their plastic book bag and that they are completing the reading log that was inside.
SBAC Parent Post
Some of our parents asked about information on SBAC during this past Evening Chat with the Principal. This link (English/Spanish-page 2) gives you a brief look at what the SBAC looks like. You can always visit the CAASPP website and find sample questions and practice tests your child can take.
We will continue this section, for our 3rd-5th grade families though May, after testing is complete. Feel free to reach out to Mrs. Jundef (sjundef@icefps.org), Mr. Rodriguez (margarito.rodriguez@icefps.org), Ms. Clark (rclark@icefps.org), or Ms. McGee (lmcgee@icefps.org) with any SBAC related questions.
We are here for you!
Operations and Logistical
- Make sure your child is up and ready for class on time
- Have your child eat a nutritious breakfast
- Create a quiet learning space in your home
- Have all school related materials ready for class and assignments
Stay At Home Order: (ICEF Core Values of COMMITMENT, COMMUNITY, EQUITY, and GROWTH)
The state has issued another Stay at Home oder, due to the rising COVID cases in California (Los Angeles being one of the highest cities). The campus will have limited access. Here is what we are attempting to do as a school:
- Only have office/admin staff on campus for food service days (as limited as possible)
- Accept families, on campus, by appointment only to conduct business (swapping out computers, signing/turning in paperwork, picking up student materials, etc.)
What does this mean for families. Families will still be able to reach the main office by telephone and email. Please do NOT visit the campus unannounced, as there will more than likely be no one there. Staff will not have access to the campus until around 8:30-9, when Challenger's staff arrives. Please reach out if you have any questions.
ICEF Bi-Weekly COVID Testing: (ICEF Core Values of COMMUNITY, COMMITMENT, and EQUITY)
ICEF is providing regular COVID-19 testing at ICEF Vista and ICEF View Park on alternating Thursdays for students and their families. You can use the links below to schedule your appointment. These links will be the same from week to week, so feel free to sign up early.

PowerSchool notices will go out at 8:45 and 12:15. If your child is not in attendance within the first 15 minutes of class, you will receive the notice. Please make sure your children are in their live sessions daily and on time!

English Language Learner (ELL) Chronicles!
In this section we will highlight the language and culture of our English Language Learners and their families. I would love to share your stories with the school community. Feel free to email stories, pictures, or examples of how you see the language and culture of our ELLs and their families incorporated in the learning environment.
An ELL Chronicle from Ms. Favors!
Jason is in one of my LLI groups. I feel that it is important to get to know my students both inside and outside of school environment. At the end of one of our sessions, Jason and I began talking about food. That is when Jason shared with me that his family owned a restaurant called “Fuente Restaurant”. I asked him for the address and he didn’t hesitate to get it from his sister. It was near the Thanksgiving break, so I told Jason I would visit during the Thanksgiving week. Jason was so excited that I was going to come to the restaurant. I also told him that I was going to bring someone with me. He tried to guess and even asked me to tell him, but I insisted it be a surprise. I kept my promise and visited “Fuente Restaurant" that week, Even better was I got the opportunity to use the Spanish I was learning in a class I was taking at West LA. The food was delicious and my surprise guest was none other than the principal of ICEF Innovation, Ms. McGee. When Jason’s family told him that Ms. McGee and I had visited the restaurant, he was surprised. I even share the photo with him, for proof. He was smiling from ear to ear!
