The Truth About School Uniforms

By: Maya Wilcox

School uniforms would be a benefit to school districts. School uniforms could decrease bullying, boost overall school performance and pride, help students in later life, and would stop students from wearing inappropriate clothing, which would save the principal a lot of time. All school sports teams wear school uniforms, so why can't school students act like a team and wear uniforms too? ( Sweeny, 2014 ).
Is bullying something that bothers you? Well school uniforms would decrease bullying. If school districts would enforce the rule of school uniforms every student would be wearing the same thing, so students could not make fun of other students clothing ( Sweeny, 2014 ).

Also, regular clothing can be costly. If school districts made the students wear school

uniforms it would be cheaper for the students parents to buy their children's clothing ( Sweeny, 2014 ). Therefore, students would not be disrespectful to other students about the price of each others clothing. Students would also have no peer pressure when picking out their outfit for the next day. The students would not have to worry about other students making fun of their clothing because every student would be wearing the same thing. The decrease of bullying is one benefit to school uniforms.

Another benefit of school uniforms is that they could help boost overall school performance, pride, and could help prepare students for later life. School uniforms would increase school attendance because more students would show up at school. More students would show up at school because other students could not make fun of their clothing ( Prill, 2013 ). The students grades will also increase because they will be more focused on school work, and less focused on what the other students are wearing ( "School Uniforms", 2014 ). By having the students wear uniforms, would bring them closer, and encourage them to have more school spirit. They will make the students act less individually and more like a team ( Sweeny, 2014 ). School uniforms would give students better self-esteem, and a better self-esteem a student has, the harder the student would work to keep up the good work ( Toppo, 2013 ). Also, by having students wear school uniforms teaches them to dress more professionally. Dressing professionally at a young age may teach the students how to dress for job interviews, and might even help the students get the job they want in later life ( Prill, 2014 ). This is another benefit to school uniforms.
A third benefit of school uniforms is that students would not be allowed to wear inappropriate clothing to school. This would save the principal a lot of time. All students would have to wear a certain uniform that was selected by the school district with no exceptions. Therefore, principals would have to spend less time enforcing clothing policies. The principal would also have to deal with less bullying and fights that would occur from students disagreeing about each others clothing ( "School Uniforms", 2014 ). Having school uniforms would also make it easier to figure out if a student is trying to get into the school or an intruder ( "School Uniforms", 2014 ). Don't you want the students to feel that school is a safe place for them? This is the third reason why I believe that school uniforms would be a benefit to school districts.
On the other hand, school uniforms give students less freedom to express themselves through clothing ( "School Uniforms", 2014 ). School uniforms can take away some students creativity and individuality expressed through clothing, and can take away the freedom of wearing religious, sports, and other creative clothing. Even though school uniforms give students less freedom to express themselves through clothing, that should not matter. Students character and personality matters. What matters is what's on the inside not the outside.
In conclusion, school uniforms would be a benefit to school districts. School uniforms would benefit school districts by decreasing bullying, boosting overall school performance and spirit, teaching students to dress more professionally, and would stop students from wearing inappropriate clothing. If you believe that school uniforms would be a benefit to your school district. Then, speak up to be heard!
