Parent-Teacher Conferences : Thursday, October 18th 1:30-7:00
The conference will include time to discuss your student's strengths and challenges as well as highlight growth and develop goals. Research has shown that parental involvement increases student's success. We know that your support is so vital to that success. If at all possible, we ask that both parents schedule their parent teacher conference during the same time slot as there are limited amount of spaces available.
4th Grade will be scheduled separately; watch for an e-mail from teachers.
Instructions for signing up:
- Find your student's teacher and the time frame you desire. PLEASE BE SURE YOU ARE UNDER THE CORRECT TEACHER'S NAME.
- Click the "sign-up" box to the right of the time.
- Click "submit and sign-up" box at the bottom of screen.
- Option: Choose "I'm a SignUpGenius member", then log-in.
- Option: Choose "I do not have a SignUpGenius account." Then, complete the information requested.
- You do not have to set-up a Sign-Up Genius account if you do not wish to do so. If you chose "Send me e-mail confirmation with iCalendar", you do not have to set up an account.
- Sign-Up Genius will send a reminder two days before Parent-Teacher Conferences.

Coffee with the Counselor
All are welcome to join the first "Coffee with the Counselor". Mrs. Hentges, our elementary school Counselor, would like to connect with parents/guardians in order to help give information, resources, and support.
"Coffee with the Counselor" is a series of presentations where parents/guardians can get information on specific subjects and then participate in a question and answer session.
Each Coffee with the Counselor will provide new information and resources. These will be offered once a quarter.
For the first Coffee with the Counselor, we will be teaming up with Parents as Teachers. Please see the information below for details:
Thursday, October 11th from 6:00-7:15pm in the Elementary Cafeteria
"Making the shift form trying to control, to connecting"
Join us for a discussion on Conscious Discipline strategies that parents can use to respond, rather than react, to life events in order to help develop self-discipline within their children. (Presented by Jessica Jobe, Blair Oaks Parents As Teachers Parent Educator)
Please contact Mrs. Hentges with any questions at jhentges@blairoaks.org.

Grading and Calculation of Final Grades
First, let me thank you for your participation in your child’s success in school. Partnering with you makes us a great team. Second, I want to share with you how we have made our grading more accurate this year. We are putting more emphasis on what students know and a little less emphasis on what they can do.
In years past, teachers would enter grades into Power School, our school information system, in a variety of different ways. Generally speaking, most would weight assessments vs. assignments based on total points they entered. While this was not necessarily an incorrect way of doing it, teachers found that this would not truly reflect what students knew but more of what they did such as homework and classwork. District-wide we have collaborated towards some consistency with grading policies. In doing so, we have also done our best to build on each grade level in preparation for upcoming years and expectations.
Grades are placed into two categories: summative or formative. Formative grades include such things as: daily class work, homework assignments, and small quizzes. Summative scores include assessments, quizzes, papers, and large projects. The summative portion of grades is a reflection of what the students have learned or retained over key concepts while the formative is what they can do or show. You may have noticed that your child's overall grade in classes doesn't appear accurate at first glance. Please note an error has not occured in Power School. Typically, more support is provided from the teacher or parents on formative pieces. While some specific examples have been provided above, teachers can use their discretion as to which category a grade will fall under based on the importance of the assignment/assessment.
Weighted Distribution for Each Grade Level:
3rd-4th Grade - Summative 40%/Formative 60%
5th Grade - Summative 40%/Formative 60%
6th Grade - Summative 40%/Formative 60%
7th Grade - Summative 50%/Formative 50%
8th Grade - Summative 60%/Formative 40%
9th-12th Grade - Summative 70%/Formative 30%
