Story 1: Thank You Ma'am
Literary Term 1: Symbolism
""I wanted a pair of blue suede shoes," said the boy." - pg.122
The symbolism in the story is the pair of blue suede shoes that Roger wanted. This represents greed; which is why Roger stole the purse from the woman to get money.
Literary Term 2: Setting
The setting describes where and when the story takes place. It helps build background and create images in the mind.
The setting is described in the quote to be somewhere at 11:00 at night, but the pictures accompanying the story describe that it happened in a city where it is very poor in income.
Literary Term 3: Character
A character is a person or animal in a story. There are major characters, who are the main characters in the story. There are also minor characters, which are supporting characters. We do not know as much info for the supporting characters as we do the main characters.
One of the main characters in the story is the boy named Roger, who was the boy who stole the woman's purse. We know that he stole the purse to get money for a pair of blue suede shoes. Later on in the story, we learn that Roger's parents aren't at home because of work, so he doesn't get much discipline or a bath every night.
Literary Term 4: Conflict
The conflict is the problem that triggers the struggles between two opposing forces.
This story is Man vs Man because the two opposing forces are Roger and the woman. The woman snatches the boy when he steals the purse, and the boy is frightened. The boy wants to be let go, but the woman won't do it.
