What does that even mean?

Pattern is an underlying structure that organizes surfaces or structures in a consistent or regular manner. It can also be described as a repeating unit of shape or form, and it may also be thought of as the "skeleton" that organizes the parts of a composition.

There's all kinds of types dude:

Flow- continually moving in one direction, ex: water in a stream

Branching- climb out in different directions, ex: branches on a tree

Spiral- curve and spiral about, ex: a galaxy
