A note from Mrs. Johansen
September has been a very exciting month to be a Sanborn Tiger. If you haven't already, please follow us on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter to see update pictures of Sanborn events. We try to post several times a week to provide families a glimpse of Sanborn events. You can find us on all social media sites at @SanbornTigers.
Over the past month, I've had conversations with parents about how they are managing their child's screen time at home, tracking what sites are frequently viewed on the various devices, and how to keep our kids safe in this digital world. The Illinois Attorney General's Office has a website that hosts extensive information for students, parents, and educators about this very topic. In the next month, we are welcoming a representative from their office to speak with our 5th and 6th graders on Cyber Safety. This presentation aligns with the District 15 Digital Citizenship lessons that our teachers have completed with their classes. When you have a moment, I encourage you to check out this site.
October is coming, which means we are starting to plan for Halloween!! As you begin to look for costumes for our Halloween parties and parade, please consider the following.
Students are permitted to wear costumes on Halloween as long as their attire complies with the student appearance policy in District 15’s parent/student handbook and the following set of expectations:
Costumes involving fake blood are not allowed.
Actual weapons or look-alikes weapons are not allowed.
Masks that cover the face and head are not allowed.
Costume make-up is allowed provided it does not cover the student’s entire face. Staff members must be able to identify students.
Costumes that could be offensive or perpetuate a stereotype about someone’s culture, gender, heritage or religion are not allowed.
More information about the Halloween parade and classroom parties will be shared closer to the date.
We appreciate your continued support of Sanborn School. Have a great weekend!
Fondly,
Erika Johansen
Social emotional learning is all day, every day in D15 this year!
District 15 this year is approaching social emotional learning (SEL) through a District-wide coordinated effort to embed it all day, every day to protect and nurture our learning environment. Teaching social emotional learning in the classroom allows teachers and students to be more present and available to learn new information.
What is SEL? SEL is how children and adults learn to understand and manage emotions, set goals, show empathy for others, establish positive relationships, and make responsible decisions, according to CASEL, a leading resource and research organization in this field.
Based on recommendations from teachers and administrators, D15’s SEL Committee has developed a SEL scope and sequence with aligned lessons and strategies that is being implemented monthly District-wide in 2019-20.
For September, the theme and lessons are about “Building Community.” Students learned what a community is, discussed which communities they belong to, and how they can contribute to the well-being of one’s school and community. Students also affirmed each others’ identities to strengthen and enhance their peaceful classroom community. October’s theme is “Self-Awareness.”
At home, families can utilize this Parent Toolkit resource (https://www.parenttoolkit.com/topics/social-and-emotional) to support your students with their social emotional development.

D15 Allergy Task Force Information
One of the most notable changes for parents and students is our food-free classroom party policy. Through the work of the task force, it was noted that food at parties invites potentially dangerous allergens into the classroom and can unintentionally isolate students unable to eat the provided snacks. Policies like this are not unique to District 15, and are already in place in many neighboring schools and districts.
To ensure an enjoyable experience at classroom parties given the new policy, District 15 will partner with schools and parents to provide alternate activity suggestions.
Allergy Task Force information is posted on the District 15 website (https://www.ccsd15.net/Page/7927) if you’d like to review the full policy and associated information.
