The United Kingdom joined the European Union January 1 1973. The United Kingdom was never a founder but was in the first bunch that joined the EU or EEC.
History of the United Kingdom
The United kingdom was never part of any other countries but only the colonies . The UK established many other countries that we see today like the one we live in right now. The UK was also trying to invade and take over many other countries. The UK is located in Western Europe, islands - including the northern one sixth of the island of Ireland- between the North Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea, northwest of France.
Flag of The United Kingdom
England and Scotland used to be two different nations. Queen Elizabeth the first dies and hands over England to King James VI of Scotland. He then merges the two flags. Then Ireland joins Great Britain and then Ireland's flag is now merged with the other flag. That is the flag we see the United Kingdom use right now.
Capital, Cities, and tourism attractions
The capital is London but also a city. Four major cities in the UK are Edinburgh, Birmingham, Leeds, Glasgow. The Tower of London used to be a prison for people who were going to be executed when there was a monarchy . Now it's become a tourist attraction and is now where the crown jewels are. Then there is the London Eye which is the biggest Ferris wheel in the world. The Palace is something that a lot of people go see since it's where the queen lives and it is a historic building. Tourists go see the Big Ben since it is a very defined looking building and has the giant clock on it. Big Ben doesn't actually refer to the clock but the bell. Finally the stonehenge are the famous rocks that were put up by druids and are meant to tell the seasons.
Geography and Government
The U.K. consists mostly of rugged hills and low mountains but some are level to rolling plains in east and southeast. The river Thames is the river that runs through England to the Sea. The white cliffs of Dover are famously known for being completely white. The government is a Parliamentary Constitutional Monarchy.
