Assistant Principal
The colder weather is upon us and starting to become more regular. Make sure your child is dressing warm with hats and gloves, kids can always take layers off if it warms up throughout the day. Students go out for recess and Physical Education as long as the temperature and wind chill factor is 20 degrees or above.
Grade 1
The first grade enjoyed a wonderful presentation with the author Brian Lies. They learned about the writing process. He shared materials to demonstrate how books are created from start to finish. He took ideas from students and created a sketch at the end of each session. He left them with a powerful message that practice makes better and never stop trying. We would like to thank our PTA for providing this opportunity!
Grade 2
How do plants and animals adapt to their changing habitats? That’s the essential question our second grade readers, writers and scientists are exploring in our unit of study, “Animals and their Changing Habitats”. We are reading informational text about habitats and our mentor text “Where Do Polar Bears Live?” has students thinking deeper about how animals have to adapt to their environments to survive. Mrs. Hilton’s class is working hard responding to an interactive read-aloud, in their Reader’s Notebook!
Grade 3
Grade three students continue to learn how multiplication and division are related. Throughout term one, students are building a conceptual understanding of multiplication and division. However, at this point in the curriculum, they are ready to memorize their math facts for quick recall. Developing automaticity with facts provides a strong foundation for future math learning.
Third grade students work together to discuss math word problems and to explain their thinking. There is a strong emphasis on using proper math vocabulary in our discussions. Research has shown that discussing math is important to prepare children to become effective problem solvers.
Grade 4
The entire fourth grade was treated to a performance by Ms. Money & The Coins, sponsored by Rockland Trust, on Thursday. This was an interactive program regarding the value of saving money, needs vs. wants, and developing healthy financial habits for the future. We have concluded our study of narrative non-fiction, true information about people and events told in story format, in reading. Ask your student about The First Step by Susan E. Goodman and they may surprise you with what they have learned! We continue to provide choices in writing, along with instruction and strategies, to increase stamina and confidence.
Grade 5
This week in Grade 5, students are putting a larger focus on reading informational texts. They are exploring the different features and structures that Informational texts are composed of and how those elements help the reader have a better understanding of the topics. This also leads them into conducting short research projects and ways to present them for an intended audience. Science is turning toward learning about earth's water - the importance of water, the sources of water, and how to protect this resource. STEAM Week in December will have the students doing a project that will culminate this unit. We also are working in the garden with Soule Farm to learn about composting and soil. A focus in Math is to be able to use models to represent problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions.. Here you'll see students using models to show addition and subtraction of decimals.
