Melting Land Ice
Melting Ice Sheets
There are only two ice sheets in the world. There is one in Greenland and one in the Antarctic.
How do ice sheets form?
Ice sheets are formed when snow falls on a piece of land for a continued period of time. Over that time the snow will harden. It will continue to snow even when it is hardened and grow continuously for many years. Over those years they ice sheets can move about 1,000 meters (6 miles).
Why are ice sheets important?
Ice sheets have enormous amount of frozen water. If the Greenland Ice sheet melted scientist predict that sea levels would rise 6 meters. Even worse sea levels would rise 60 meters if the Antarctic would melt.
Which ice sheet are on land?
There are only two in the entire world one in Greenland and one in Antarctic. These two could highly affect sea levels if they melt.
