Types of Colleges
Trade Schools
- Sometimes referred to as vocational or technical schools
- Allows students to get a certificate/degree in a shorter time frame, but at a much greater cost
- Many of these colleges are a "for-profit" business and have closed leaving students unable to finish their education
Community College
- Also known as junior colleges, are two year colleges where you can earn certificates, associate degrees, or transfer to a four year university
- Cost is a fraction of trade schools
4 Year Universities
- Public and private colleges where you can earn a bachelor degree and can continue on to pursue graduate degrees
- Private universities cost more $$$ than attending a public university
- We have two public college systems in California: Cal State Universities (CSU) University of California (UC)
The UC System
The CSU System
California Community Colleges
COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAMS
Test Optional vs Test Blind
*The UC/CSU system no longer require testing.
Test Optional: You can submit test scores as part of your college application and the university will take them into consideration, but it is not required.
Test Blind: Universities will not look at any test scores as part of the application process.
Many private universities will award merit scholarships and college course placements based on SAT/ACT scores.
SAT vs ACT
Both exams are widely accepted by US 4 year colleges.
You are not required to take any college entrance exams if attending a 2 year Community College.
