Session Descriptions
Descriptions of Sessions:
Courtney Gordon
Teach Developmentally-Appropriate Writing - PK - Gr. 2
With the youngest writers, we need to honor their developmental stages. The bulk of this session reveals writing activities that fit the four stages of writing: drawing, labeling, listing, and sentence writing. Gain an understanding of how persuasive, informative, and narrative are represented within these development stages. Participants leave with a calendar suggesting a progression of these stages across the year.

Revitalize the Writing Process - Gr. 3 - 6+
Students need to participate in the writing process routinely. However, this doesn’t always have to be a long and arduous progression from pre-writing to publishing. Learn how the writing process can be executed in one sitting or across multiple days. Learn how the publishing standards should vary depending on whether it’s a strong first draft or a solid final draft. And, learn how the 6 Traits fit within the steps of the writing process.

Classroom Management: From the Foundation Up!
Beginning with a focus on creating a philosophical foundation for classroom management, this dynamic session will move forward to finding tools to support the participants’ chosen philosophy. Functions of behaviors, teachers’ current practices, and challenges to classroom management will be examined through a combination of sharing real life experiences, demonstrations, and group discussions. Participants will leave with a variety of simple but cost- effective ideas and strategies that can be easily incorporated into their classroom management system. Discussion and instruction will be geared to appropriate primary or intermediate teacher focus.

I Gave the NWEA Test, Now What?
This session will help teachers use the data from the NWEA MAP Growth test to drive instruction in their classroom. Teachers will learn how to use Standard Deviation and Mean to decide what kind of instruction should be taking place. Various reports and resources will be explored. Handouts will be given to guide teachers through the use of these reports. Teachers will explore the Learning Continuum to identify the Indiana State Standards for a student’s RIT score. Participants should bring a copy of the CLASS report and their NWEA username and password. Discussion and instruction will be geared to appropriate primary or intermediate teacher focus.

Going from Good to Great with Guided Reading - Grades K-2
This session will focus on what research demonstrates as the most effective guided reading practices for the K-2 classroom. The teachers will explore teaching reading from a meaning perspective while arming their students with strategies that develop independence and transfer. This practical hands-on session will also have time devoted to teachers collaboratively planning lessons with Christy and colleagues.

Best Practices in Book Clubs - Grades 3-6+
Books clubs are one of the best ways for students to develop comprehension in authentic ways through annotation, written reflection, and discussion with peers. Christy will lead you step-by -step in how to establish, maintain, and grow book club members while also keeping them accountable and gathering those pesky grades! Develop not only your student's love of reading, but also their empathy as citizens in our democracy!

Toying With Writing
Are you in a rut with your writing instruction? Are you looking for some fresh writing ideas? Then this session is for you. Writing is one of the more difficult subjects we teach because students struggle with applying the skills to their writing. Toying with Writing will help teachers connect an abstract writing concept to a familiar toy. “Writing with Toys” will help build their memory for the particular skill, and it will ” kick up” your student engagement. Discussion and instruction will be geared to appropriate primary or intermediate teacher focus. You will leave this session with several new strategies and a bag of new "tricks."
