Danielson meets GardnerCourse Num: 94 (4)
Who's working harder, you or your students?? When Charlotte Danielson meets Howard Gardner, multiple intelligences become powerful tools to actively engage learner "X" in your classroom. Student engagement is more than turn and talk. In this workshop, learn DYNAMIC strategies and best practices currently used in the classroom to engage students in the learning process. When this course was offered on January 20, 2014, its average rating was 4.77/5. Comments: Very engaging presentation - excellent activities to use in my classroom. I rated the length of this session to be a 1 because I wish it was longer. They had so many great ideas to share that I felt they ran out of time. I wish they could have shared more of their strategies with us. I think that this could be a successful two hour session. The presenters had the class try out each proposed activity, which was very effective in allowing the class to think creatively about how they could utilize them in their own classrooms. A second hour would allow for more techniques to be discussed, and the pace would not feel rushed. I loved the ideas, and the fact that we were able to practice the strategies that John

When a condensed version of this course was offered on January 20, 2014, its average rating was 4.66/5. Comments: I picked up so many tips and tricks that I can easily incorporate into my daily classroom routine both activities and resources. I learned so much about motor skill strategies and how improving eye movements can also help with neater handwriting. These activities only take 30 seconds and can be done through out the day to make great improvements in handwriting. Megan did a great job, and I came away with helpful things I can do tomorrow. The take home activities were wonderful Some very hands on activities and tips to use in the classroom and with individual students plus super activities for brain breaks and movement in the classroom to keep students engaged. Always good to get more ideas to add to your own tool box. Great session! Presenter was engaging and gave good examples and activities to carryover in the classroom. Since I'm not an OT or a teacher, most of th

Gamification of Learning to Increase Student EngagementCourse Num: 80 (4)
Can the use of games in the classroom increase student engagement and achievement? Research says, “Yes!” This session begins by defining the qualities of online gaming that capture students’ attention and interest. Incorporation of these characteristics into classroom instruction enhances the content, promotes active engagement, emphasizes social emotional learning, and increases academic performance. Through experiential activities, participants will explore low- and high-tech examples of games and how these games can meet the diverse needs of learners in every grade and across content areas. When this course was offered on January 20, 2014, the average rating was 3.93/5. Comments: Great session! Great ideas that are easy to implement in the classroom Great practical strategies from a seasoned classroom teacher. These were things I will definitely do with my classes. The whole first hour was discussion about games and play and what they are. It was unnecessary to take that much time. More importantly, more games that we could actually use and take to our classes would have been preferred Krista was a very enthusiastic presenter, but the main idea of the

Building Academic Success on Social Emotional LearningCourse Num: 82 (4)
This interactive and experiential session will help teachers design lessons to develop students of character through the integration of Social Emotional Learning (SEL). When SEL forms the foundation of the academic experience, students are explicitly taught how to recognize and manage their emotions, which affects how and what they learn. When barriers to learning are reduced, classrooms are transformed into effective learning communities where students are engaged, learning thrives, and achievement soars. When this course was offered on January 20, 2014, its average rating was 4.36/5. Comments: The presentation was quite good and I liked that we practiced some of the activities. This was especially welcome at the end of the day when we needed to stand after a full day of workshops. I appreciate that the presenter is going to send us her slides of information. I am also interested in knowing more about the research behind all of this. I read Daniel Goleman's book years ago and I'd like to know what the current thinking is on the topic and who the researchers are. I found the following discussions to be helpful: how to teach students to recognize and manage the

This workshop will focus on Danielson component 4C: Communicating With Families. During session 1, participants will create a newsletter in Publisher, as well as craft letters to parents about class units/projects using templates as a guide. The session will also discuss ways in which students can contribute to the development of these resources. In session 2, participants will share/get feedback on their finished product and then be presented with an introduction to using digital tools for newsletters of the future. When this course was offered in Spring 2014, the average course rating was 4.85/5. Comments: I enjoyed seeing what everyone did for their newsletters in Publisher. I wish we had time to share what we did in SMORE. I would have liked to see how everyone was figuring out the different tools. I also recommend that if it is offered again next year, that the computers have Google Chrome. It was much easier to continue working at home, once I was able to use the recommended browser. It is wonderful to learn new skills that we can share with our students. I can see how producing a class newsletter will be a wonderful assignment for all my levels of XXX

How to Design a Madison Teacher Academy CourseCourse Num: 93 (4)
Do you have an idea, strategy, or topic that you would like to share with others? Have you been given feedback that you are highly effective in certain areas or have an innovative approach? If you answered "yes" to either question, you should consider sharing with your colleagues through the Madison Teacher Academy. This course will prepare you to write a proposal that targets school and district needs while appealing to your colleagues. By the end of the session you will have a proposal in the system for consideration. Leading professional development is not something for an elite few; we ALL have great things to share with each other.

Call for Proposals - Fall 2014 Madison Teacher Academy
I am happy to announce this call for proposals for workshops in the Fall 2014 session of the Madison Teacher Academy.
Fall courses will run between September 10, 2014 and December 22, 2014.
The proposal form is available here. Initial proposals will be accepted until 3:00pm on Friday, August 29, 2014. Those selected to present will be compensated for preparation and presentation time at $46.00/hour as stipulated in Part B, Article V of the Agreement. Based on feedback received from presenters this summer, you will have the option to decline payment for your presentation time and opt to instead receive PD credit that can be applied to the six hours needed to be excused from the June 22, 2015 PD day.
If you are tying your proposal to Danielson, you should aim to directly address 1-2 components where workshop participants can expect to see tangible results due to the workshop. Teachers who have been consistently rated “highly effective” in a particular component are urged to consider sharing their expertise through this avenue.
Workshops do not have to be limited to teaching staff members. It would be wonderful to see some proposals aimed at teaching assistants, secretaries, nurses, etc.
Don’t hesitate to reach out to a principal or supervisor if you have an idea and would like some assistance in developing a proposal. Answers to frequently asked questions and guidance for crafting your workshop proposal can be found by clicking here.
Important Dates:
· Proposals accepted - July 17 - August 29
· Registration open - September 3
· Courses run - September 10 - December 22
