Plants that can be found in the Roanoke Sound are prickly pear cacti, live oak, American beach grass and trumpet creeper. Common animals are the hognose snakes, raccoons, opossums, red and grey foxes, rabbits, white-tailed deer, brown pelicans, ospreys, blue herons and snowy egrets.

The Roanoke Sound shares boundaries with the Croatan Sound, the Albemarle Sound, the Pamlico Sound and the Oregon Inlet. It is apart of the Atlantic Ocean.
