The 2008 Election
In 2008, the Republican candidate was John McCain and the Democratic candidate was Barack Obama. As we all know, Barack Obama won the election and became the first African American president ever. Obama wanted his vision for a new America to come true: healthcare for all workers, a boosted economy and an increase in taxes for the wealthy. Of all the electoral votes, Obama got 365 and McCain got just 173. In the popular vote, Obama got about 53% and McCain got about 46%.
9/11 Attacks
September 11, 2001 is one of the most well known and sad days in American history. This was the day that the Al Qaeda terrorist group flew airplanes into the Twin Towers knocking them over and killing thousands of citizens. The leader of the group was Osama bin Laden, who was killed on May 2, 2011 by US Navy Seals. These attacks sparked not only many laws and acts passed but also a war in Afghanistan and a hunt for bin Laden.
War in Afghanistan
The war in Afghanistan began in response to the 9/11 attacks on October 7, 2001, just a month after the attacks. There were three phases in the war: overthrow the Taliban, defeat Taliban's military and lastly counterinsurgency. While the war is still going on, most of the combat troops have been pulled out. There is hope that one day, the fighting will be over and there will only be peace left.
