Your Weekly Update from Brown Elementary School
Mr. McCann's Message
Dear Families,
The holiday season is upon us. Hanukkah started on Thursday of this week and extends through December 15th. A Happy Hanukkah to all who celebrate. Also a Merry Christmas and a Happy Kwanzaa to our friends who celebrate those special days.
We wrap up our work before the break on December 22nd. We are off from December 23rd through January 1st. We will be back at Brown on January 2nd.
Have a wonderful time with your family during this holiday season.
Best,
Aidan McCann, Principal
Five Things You Need to Know
1 - SPOTLIGHT ON SPECIALS - ART
COLOR, COLOR EVERYWHERE!
It's been a color-palooza in the art room this month! All classes have been working with color theory and learning how the element of color helps form the artistic stories we are telling. Kinders made color wheels, tried their hand at color mixing with oil pastels, and created "Mondrian Maps" using either primary or secondary color families. First graders learned about rainbows and how science and color are connected, then created beautiful abstract rainbows. Second grade used warm, cool and complementary color families on their name grid projects. 3rd grade learned how to create tertiary colors by mixing a primary with a secondary, and made beautiful Op-Art color family weavings. And 4th grade focused on analogous colors in creating their amazing 3D marble paintings. Click here to see all of these projects together!
Next, we will begin creating art for the Square 1 art fundraiser, and follow those up with clay projects. For up to the minute updates in real time, follow along on Instagram! The handle is @brownartroom to catch stories, reels and posts about all of the amazing art activities happening throughout the year. As always, feel free to contact me at mparven@natickps.org if you have any questions! -Mrs. Parven
2 - LOST AND FOUND
We have a large number of items in our Lost and Found that need to get back to the right students. There are jackets, sweatshirts, sweaters, water bottles and more. Please encourage your child to visit the lost and found (next to the cafeteria) and reclaim any clothing that may belong to them. These items will be donated to charity as of December 21st.
3 - THANK YOU MATHWORKS!
We recently had a visit from a number of MathWorks employees who offered to help with a Fall Cleanup of our courtyard. They removed bags of leaves and planted the last of the bulbs that had been donated to us by the PTO. In the Spring, we will see our beds come back to life with the large number of plantings recently put in.
4 - EMPATHY
One of our Core Values is "Practice Empathy". We recently held principal chats with all of our grade level teams to discuss the meaning of Empathy. This can be a tricky concept for students. We shared that it means to understand the thinking and feeling of others. As an administration, we modeled showing empathy and what that might look like at school. We role played various scenarios where students needed to demonstrate empathy. As our first Core Value, we find it important for students to understand the meaning of this word.
5 - PTO
We have a vibrant and active PTO here at Brown Elementary. I encourage you to look at their website in order to learn more about what they do and to see what opportunities there are to get involved.
Here is the PTO website.
All the best to our families,
Aidan McCann, Principal
