3rd Grade

From the Teacher's Pen
Merry Christmas Season and Happy New Year! It is good to be back to work where I find it a lot easier to NOT nibble during the day or eat lunch 2 hours after eating breakfast. On a lighter note, it was touching to see and hear the 3rd graders sharing Christmas stories, showing off new jackets, hats, scarves, and new pets.
Congratulations to Zach and Joanna - winners of the VFW essay contest. Zach took 1st place at the district level and Joanna took 2nd place for 3rd graders. Well done!
Just a Few FYIs
- The 2nd MAP testing sessions will be the week of January 17th with make-ups the following week. I am excited to see the growth in each student.
- Catholic Schools Week activities begin Sunday, January 29th. Have your students wear their uniforms to Mass. I will be polling the students to find out which Mass they are planning to attend. Teachers will coordinate the students at each Mass to serve as greeters or gift bearers.
- Open House will also be Sunday, January 29th. Please plan to come - we are planning something special for those who attend, really! (Details will be revealed in the Thursday Notes). Also, encourage neighbors and friends to stop in and take a look at St. Michael.
Prayers for the 2nd Trimester
Please look in your child's homework folder for the prayers to be tested on this trimester. I will begin with The Jesus Prayer testing on January 12th, but it is a good idea to pray each prayer at least twice each week. Note, the prayer list has changed a little bit:
- Guardian Angel Prayer
- Prayer at The Stations of The Cross
- The Jesus Prayer
- The Morning Offering
- Come, Holy Spirit
Career Fair - Thursday, February 2nd @ 1:00 - 2:45pm
We will host a career fair during Catholic Schools Week. If you love your job and want to inspire a young person to plan for a similar future - then we need you. Our plan is to have tables set up and to assign a portion of each table to our presenters. Students will wander through in an open-house-style format, stopping at booths and finding out about working in that career. Simple hand-outs or take-aways, or hands on tools would be a great idea (i.e. an item with the job or company name, a business card, a handout that is ready to go or can be colored, a chance to hammer a nail or wear a stethoscope, etc). Please RSVP with me as soon as possible.
Ask a 3rd Grader
1. What steps does an illustrator take before a book gets published?
2. How do you show 3 x 6 using a number line?
3. What is the difference between 3 x 6 and 6 x 3 when you draw circles and dots?
