Careers resolutions for 2017
Top 5 tips for 1st/2nd years!
“Three weeks to go till semester 2 – the Careers Centre recommends you follow the steps below to ensure you make the most of the summer of 2017”
1. Update your CV
If a potential employer asked you for your CV today do you have a version you’d be happy to send? Make sure you always have an updated CV you’re proud of.
- Follow advice on our website, note the difference between a “holiday job” CV and a professional CV.
- On your return to university attend a CV workshop.
2. Find work experience
There are not many formal work experience opportunities available for 1st and 2nd years so do some hunting yourself.
- Speculative (means unadvertised opportunities) – armed with your new CV send out emails or LinkedIn messages to contacts (see 3. – network).
- Keep using our website - it is continually updated with new opportunities – Summer Internship Scheme (open to 2nd years, paid work experience in University Units will open in Semester 2), Job Shop, Work shadowing, Santander sponsored paid internships.
3. Network
Start creating your own career network from family friends, school friends and university contacts then connect with St Andrews alumni using LinkedIn and Saint Connect.
4. Make yourself interesting!
What makes you different to other students? Get involved – take a role of responsibility in a club or society, volunteer, assist with research, become a student ambassador. Your degree is not enough, you need to show other sides of your personality.
5. Use the Careers Centre
- Beat the queue - book careers events early
- See an adviser at one of our drop-in afternoon appointments.
