Day of the Dead 2019: Spanish and Art Students Participate in Day of the Dead
This is an important event to the Hispanic Community in Toledo and serves as a fundraiser for the center. Mr. Lorenzo Flores, art director of the center, enjoyed the fact that our students wanted to participate in this event since there are only a few local schools that participate. According to Flores, this tradition is about remembering those who have passed on, and he likes to see that students are learning about this holiday by participating in this event. Spanish Honors Society members were able to tour all of the altars on their field trip and compare the different ways that Hispanic families remember their loved ones. In addition, they participated in an art class where they learned about and created their own sugar skulls.
Spanish IV students work with National Company
Spanish IV students spent the first quarter on a career unit learning how to communicate in Spanish about professions, future plans in the career force, and job interviews, resumes, applications, and advertisements. At the end of this unit, students were asked to write advertisements in Spanish for a national company, Leaf Filter Gutter Protection, to use in the United States. The goal of these activities was to support Ohio Academic Standards in World Languages by giving students a real-life, practical use for the language in a setting that is authentic-a setting for native Spanish speakers. In addition, this also supports our school’s goals of “Empowering students to be future ready.”
Students applied their career knowledge by creating company advertisements for real world use. In doing so, students had to make comparisons with the job advertisements they found in other Spanish-speaking countries to ensure that they were relevant not only in the language, but also in culture.
What the students learned from this experience is that they have already developed job-relevant skills for their Spanish knowledge. In addition, for a job well done, Leaf Filter Gutter Protection presented the class a letter thanking them for their service and rewarded the students with a catered lunch from Chipotle!
