A Peek at Next Week

Reading - Readers will revisit paraphrasing, practicing with non-fiction articles in class. We will also learn about footnotes and how to use them when an author includes them in their text. We finish the week working with topics and main ideas. Students will practice determining main ideas of paragraphs and books, while supporting their ideas with details from the text.

Writing - Writers will finish their graphic organizer and begin their first draft this week. Persuasive letter are our focus. Knowing the important parts of a persuasive letter Is key: the intended audience, a strong point of view, using strong words, having good evidence or opinions, and offering solutions to problems.

Math - Students are working with one and two step word problems to solve addition and subtraction problems many different ways. We have spent a lot of time decomposing numbers to add and subtract, and last week we began using pictorial models to further our understanding of place value. Drawing place value models, using number lines, and representing problems using a strip diagram are our focus at the beginning of the week. We will move on to using expanded notation to add and subtract, and finish with the standard algorithm. All of the work this week will be completely immersed in problem solving.

Science - We continue with matter, learning about how states of matter change. We will conduct a couple of investigations to show how liquids can become solids, how solids become liquids, and how liquids can become a gas.

Social Studies - Students are finishing their travel brochure with partners. We then turn to "Having a Voice in Your Community."

Table Decoration

Save a little room on your Thanksgiving table. The kids don't know it yet, but we are using a word study lesson to make a fun table decoration. Each of your children are unique and gifted in different ways and this craft will show just how special they are.
