ID Badges
ALL students must be wearing their ID and it should be visible at all times. Whether it be their school ID on a lanyard OR a temporary ID (sticker) badge, it MUST be worn.
If a student has lost their ID Badge, please replace it in the front office (it does cost money to replace an ID Badge).
If a student has forgotten their ID Badge, the consequence is last in line at lunch and no Snack Bar.
NEW
Students will be charged for an extensive number of temporary badges! Please be sure to use and wear your issued ID Badge.
Cell Phone Policy
Cell phones are SHUT DOWN and PUT AWAY from 7:30a - 2:20p
- Student are expected to follow EPS expectations for cell phone use.
- There is a progressive plan if students are using their cell phone during the school day.
- If cell phone usage becomes habitual, it can lead to a parent picking up their cell phone in the Front Office.
Science
Hello Thunderhawks!
This week we began our unit on Energy Transfer. Students completed a lab on Monday in which we collected data and we then graphed that data on Tuesday and conducted our analysis. This lab involved taking ice and raising its temperature until it boils. We then conducted another lab on Thursday in which we analyzed how the amount of a substance affects the transfer of thermal energy. Students then watched a lab demonstration on Friday to see how the environment affects energy transfer. We will continue with this topic next week. We will then begin to look at how energy is transferred via conduction, convection, and radiation.

English
This week we are taking a look at how to distinguish between a Biography, Autobiography and a Memoir. You might ask your student “What does an Autobiography and a Memoir have to do with pie?”. See if they can explain it to you :)
We are reading excerpts from a Biography and a Memoir on Colin Powell. We will continue to use text evidence to support and explain analysis of these texts.

Literacy
Book Projects start Monday! Students went the library on Thursday or Friday of last week and selected a book to meet the following criteria:
150 pages or more in length
Fiction
No Graphic Novels / Manga
No Diary of a Wimpy Kid / Dork Diaries / Dear Dumb Diary (ask your student if you are curious why)
Hasn’t been read by them or to them in the past
All reading for this project will be done in class, with outside reading only for those who don’t finish the required daily pages during class. We will be working on this for the next 3 weeks and then finish with an awesome project called Book Buyer / Book Seller. More information will come on the project as we get closer.

6th Grade Math
This week we continued working on Unit 2. We worked on finding the LCM and GCF of 2 numbers. We also found out how to use factor trees to determine prime factorization of a number.
Need Help in Math? Here’s what you can do:
Come see your math teacher during pre-advisory (7:10-7:40)
Come do a working lunch. (There is always 1 math teacher available during that time to offer help).
6th Grade IA Pre-Algebra
This week we worked on classifying numbers in the Real Number System. We also learned how to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions. We applied these skills in the Discovery Ed.investigations.

Geography
Hello Thunderhawk families! This week we are starting our Chapter 3 Unit, which is all about Human Geography. Students will learn about things such as human population centers, as well as Push/Pull factors in an area. Students showed success in our Chapters 1 & 2 Unit, so we hope the same pattern continues for Chapter 3!

Message from 6th Grade Principal
Hello Thunderhawk Families!
This week our 6th graders dressed up to bring awareness to “Think Before You Post.” This is a great opportunity for students to learn about how their words matter, even when “typed.” See below for pictures of our students who dressed up for Zoom Meetings…business on top, casual on bottom.
We also decorated our doors with KINDNESS!
Next week our Heartland volleyball team will be spreading awareness about breast cancer. This will include dress up days and mini lessons to spread awareness.
Don’t forget that school picture day is next Monday! You can order online or send a check with the order form on Monday.
Thank you for all your support! We look forward to seeing as many parents as possible at Parent Teacher Conferences on Oct. 6th and Oct. 10th (more info coming soon!).
